The hunter that was visiting is truly dedicated to doing so correctly. He came out a day ahead of time, did a lot of walking and stalking, and carried a big telescope of some kind. He watched some mule deer in action, and said he saw a big lone six-by-six bull elk rise off his bed ground, stretch and start grazing. He was hesitant to tell us of this, because he thought that we would think he was blowing smoke.

Although we've never seen any elk on our ranch, they are not that far away on the Rosebud Reservation. He knows what he sees, because he has plenty of experience. Within the past two years, he even went to Africa on a safari. While there, he took eight different African species, and had to add on a room to his house to display the new trophies.

I view the elk sighting with mixed emotions. They are a beautiful graceful animal, but can be terribly destructive. It would be nice if they would stay on someone else's land. It's the old NIMBY (not in my back yard) syndrome coming through.

are those the famed polecats of the sandhills???

my wife wants me to build a fence and gate similar to that one, to front our horse pen along the driveway.......
great pics Soapweed, but the ideas it puts in the Mrs. head !!!

Soapweed:

I've seen Bison, Elk, and a neighbor saw Moose East of Baker, MT.

Nobody believed us, either.

After the Brand Inspector got more calls, they did understand about the Bison.

We figured the Elk came cross country from Teddy Roosevelt Park, maybe 70 miles X-country.

No idea where the Moose came from.

Saw more than one set of Mountain Lion tracks over the years, too.

Plenty of critters around that folks don't think are around.

Got some nice pictures of the Bighorn Sheep between Miles City and BAker a few years back, just off of 12.

Badlands

Badlands- Those young moose will really move around the country...We've been seeing a few down here almost every year- most figure they are coming out of Canada- some possibly following the Missouri down from the mountains...

About 20 years ago their was quite a write up in the papers about one that had been tagged (and I saw ) near Fort Peck- he was found a year or two later down somewhere in the St. Joseph Missouri area after apparently following the river south...

Either he was real finicky and couldn't find new territory he liked or he was checking out Lewis and Clarks route
