My cousin and friend, JF Ranch, kindly loaned me the use of some of his corrals today. I appreciate it very much, as any other facilities were quite far away.

There is always an air of mystique surrounding the secretive preg checking job. :-)

I recall you ride a Ralph Shimon saddle, Soapweed. Who made the
ones Peach Blossom and Saddle Tramp ride?

The saddle Peach Blossom rides is one that Harry Adams made. He was originally out of Wyoming, but later moved to Valentine. He was a superb craftsman, and even wrote a quite detailed large hardbound book about saddlemaking. Unfortunately, too many cigarettes and poor health in general led him to an early death when he was around fifty years old. I think he is buried at Pine Bluffs, Wyoming.

Saddletramp's saddle was made by one of his long ago friends, who lives in eastern South Dakota. I think they worked on the same ranch quite a few years back. I don't remember the man's name.

Nope . . that look suggests a sniff of sweet smelling, sweaty saddle pads! LOL

Perfumatory smells are all in the nose of the beholder. Pleasant aromas to one feller might be icky poo to another. That is about as profound as I can get at the moment.

Here are a few pertinent quotes relating to smells.

"The Liberals talk about a stable government but we don't know how bad the stable is going to smell."
T. C. Douglas

"My favorite thing about the Internet is that you get to go into the private world of real creeps without having to smell them."
Penn Jillett (here the word "cowboy" can be substituted for the word "creeps.") :-)

"Loneliness adds beauty to life. It puts a special burn on sunsets and makes night air smell better."
Henry Rollins

"Perfume : any smell that is used to drown a worse one"
Elbert Hubbard

"Did you know babies are nauseated by the smell of a clean shirt?"
Jeff Foxworthy

Good pics Soapweed. That bunch of heifers tested good. Most around our area are testing about 20% open.

We test tomorrow so will find out how our operation compares.

See you are enjoying our Harvest moon also.

Soapweed,

What were the percentages of opens for the blacks vs the reds after the hot summer?

Badlands

All we have preg checked is our yearling heifers. The reds didn't come out too good. Out of one red heifer, one heifer was open. 100% empty. :(
Out of the blacks, 14.9% ended up being empty.

We sold the open yearlings today. The blacks averaged 931 pounds @ $106.54 per cwt ($991.85), and the lone red one weighed 910 pounds @ $105.00 per cwt, and brought $955.50.

Sorry for this kind of an answer, but you asked.

Our experience in the past is that usually there is very little difference between the black heifers and the red ones, when they are compared in more quantity. We have raised both side by side for quite a few years. I like them both, but have decided that it would be easier if we just stick with one or the other. The blacks won the toss of the coin.
