We have too much snow for me to drag meadows today and I don't feel like finding anything else to do at the moment so I thought I'd post some pictures I took this morning.

Here's a few of the yearling heifers.

This one has her snow shades on.

Neighbor had a calf nearly buried in the snow.

I think Mrs. crane was chewing Mr. cranes butt for leaving the sunny beaches of Mexico to come here.

I don't think you should trade cattle with the neighbor. Fabulous group of cattle you have there Ned.

Gorgeous set of heifers Ned :D . It is funny you posted because I was just thinking about your cattle this morning. Thanks for the update, your herd looks very nice :D .

I won't be back to dragging for a couple of days here either. It should really start greening up for us both once this melts though :D .

Thanks Ned, I like your cattle even though I've been cursing Hereford coloured cattle with chapped/sunburnt bags here for the last week. We are going to try taking hobbles off of a couple of them today.

Don't stay away so long next time.

Nice looking heifers Ned, The calves look good also, I always liked Herfords, started out with them when I first rented the place, Just seemed like I wasn't able to put them together like I wanted, Ended up going with Red Angus and they served me well, just always had a soft spot for Herfords. 101

Thanks alot everyone.

WyomingRancher We have a few places the snow started to melt off today and I think the grass has already jumped up. Grass should grow like crazy now. Sure beats the 80 mph plus winds we had last week.

Better have the drag hooked up ready to go when the snow does! You'll be pretty green when the white dissappears. Your mountain grass appears to be doing the job for them good Herfords. Got a kick out of your crane pic. Can almost hear her, can't ya'!

I gotta say Ned Jr., that that is amongst the finest groups of cattle of any breed I have seen in some time. Thanks for posting.

I'll second or third the assesment of your herd!! I hope your banker takes note of what those heifers are on the balance sheet. Probably $1.10# or nearly so, as they stand(they look to weigh #775). Those are some really, really nice calves. It's pretty self-evident where those heifers came from. They should be worth more this time next year(yearlings I mean).

Ned Jr.,
I got some real nice calves from your sires. I AI'd some smaller angus females with them. When I get some time I will post some pictures. Good pigment around the eyes. I am quite happy with what I see so far.

Glad everyone likes them. :D I can't help but get excited when I look at the group of heifers this year, can't wait to calve them out next year. 17 of them are daughters of 175 and will be AI'd to 320. The remaining 19 head are by 6050, 6152 and 5603. They will be AI'd to 175.

Horseless, glad your liking your calves. I've thought about getting ahold of you to see how things worked out. I'll look forward to some pictures.

:agree:

I have a question for ya Ned... What is your opionion on yellow verses red herefords... Personally I perfer the red... Don't ask me why...

I'm feeling a bit sorry for the neighbor! Is that one typical of his cows? However, it appears she is taking care of her calf, and is getting by on what she can forage for herself.......is that what it takes to be a 'low cost producer'????

The Herefords do look very pretty. And I'm partial to the, that being the breed my family had bred up from the old milking shorthorns. Do you always have to feed them all winter and spring, or is this unusual there?

You must be a bit warmer in winter, but maybe more arid than western SD, with our 'hoped for' annual 14" of precipitation, mostly coming April through October. We did have too much severe cold, several nights hit -20 to -40. Maybe less wind than usual in winter, and even through March, but plenty in early April! We had a tough winter with grass covered deep in snow, so had to feed all winter, which us unusual for us.

Grass is coming on great now, far ahead of usual, so probably fixing to get froze off!

God willing, the freezes and the hot, dry winds won't shut down our prospects for a decent grass/wild hay crop this year. That would be a a welcome cvhange after 8 years of pretty severe drought in a relatively small area of western SD.
