THE MOUNTAIN MAN

My uncle Roy was a bugle boy

In the Seventh Cavalry

He busted his ash blowin that brass

In the summer of 33

His family were killed by Quantrell's raiders

When he was just a lad

And being the youngest of the bunch

No wonder he went bad

He grew up fighten and raising Hell

Like so many of his time

So he figgered he better join the Army

And get away from his life of crime

The Army suited him quite well

And gave him a place to grow

But when the injun wars started out West

He couldn't wait to go

So he rode out West with all the rest

To the land of the wily Cheyenne

And that is where, so I been told,

That he became a man

He was mustered out, round about,

Eighteen thirty eight

When the Oregon country called to him

And it was to be his fate

To become a trapper and hunter as well

And live the outdoor way

And to nature be true and to Rendezvous

And to always have his say

The years went by and he settled in

Near the river of Deschutes

But the mountains west he loved the best

And they would hold his roots

The Cascade Range is what their called

And beauty is their mark

The summer livin is just plain easy

But winter is no lark

The snow that falls and wind that blows

And the frost that covers the ground

Will put you to a greater test

Than anything you have found

"Ol Roy" begin to wonder about

helping to protect this land

so he and a bunch got together

and discussed the problems at hand

They needed a crew they could put together

And fight if they needed to

To protect the area that had become home

For more than just a few

They finally had it figgered out

So the plans were laid

To gather a group of Mountain Men

And call it "The Cascade Brigade "

And that's the history of this group

That is still in force today

And as a member of this bunch

I live the "Mountain Man"  way.
