Poor way to get the neighbors together

Thursday afternoon, a twister hit my brothers place. His house is ok, but stuff rattled around inside. Lost his barn, calving shed, cake shed, and most of his corrals. Took the roof off his shop and leaned the walls. Friday afternoon, around 50 people showed up to help clean up the mess. Had 6 loader tractors hualing stuff out to a pile. All the little kids were busy picking up stuff on the side hill and making piles for the loaders to pick up. We got the shop straightened up fairly well and pulled off the remaining roof to get it ready for a new roof. They found all his saddles, but lost most of the tac.
The neighbor ladies put on a great meal with refreshments after the cleanup.
afterwards, the kids were having a blast hauling a big wheel trycicle up the hill and riding it down. I as well as several others almost filled our jeans when one kid went right through the barbed wire fence that we hadn't noticed that had been releived of it's wires in the storm.

His insurance isn't going to pay a fraction of what it will cost to rebuild. The twister was headed straight for town but lifted before reaching town. No one was home when it hit, but the hired man watched the funnel from town and headed out a bit later. One dog that never left the yard was over a mile away and running as fast as he could right down the middle of the county road. Their bigger dog never barks, but he was barking like crazy when my brother got home.

Sorry to hear about all the damage. Glad to hear no one was hurt. Great to know there's still good neighbors to be had.......who knows what kinda friendships this will make, or improve. Everything happens for a reason, maybe this is to show him how many folks really care about them.

They'll still be in our prayers, in hopes that repairs are made quickly, but safely. And who knows....maybe the insurance co. will surprise everyone.

Thursday nite was a scary nite...so glad his family was safe...and YES we do live in the best community here in the sandhills...! Hope they can rebuild and be better than ever..

About 20 yrs ago we had a HUGE tornado rip thru the valley here. Didn't really hurt me but trashed the other side of the county road.

20 Yrs later we are STILL finding things lost in the blow! Tool box here, some PVC pipe there...it's amazing what shows up years later, so all may not be lost yet. It may come back in worse shape than when it left...but you will find things in the darnest places!

Must be heart-breaking almost starting over but it sounds like the support-system in town is terrific. Prayers for all those involved and for the good to come out of the trials.

It amazes me how rural people will show up to help their neighbors, but the urban folks start yelling for the guvment to come help.

Glad no one was seriously hurt.

It's a poor way to get the neighbours together, but it sure is a good feeling to see a crowd show up in a hurry when you need help. It shows that when there is trouble, people will pull together.

We had a mow full of hot hay years ago and when the fire trucks got here, it wasn't more than 10 minutes before most of the neighbours from 2 concessions either way were here to help take the hay out while the fire department stood by to hose the hay down as we took it out. Job was done in no time.

After that experience, I always preferred to be on the giving end rather than the receiving end.

Later, a lot of the same folks that helped us out said I made a big mistake. Shoulda just let her burn and get a new barn out of the deal!
