Last week I pulled out the old address book and sent an e-mail survey to about 25 friends and family so see in light of the recalls and food safety issues how they felt about beef. I told them it was so that I could better manage & advertise and asked them give me honest answers. These are the questions and the results ... (I might add that none of these people farm, ranc, or produce any livestock)
1. Do you eat beef
All said yes
2. Do you prefer extra or moderatly lean beef
Over 95% said they prefered moderately lean, wanted marbling but wanted excess outer fat trimmed.
3. What % beef vs pork or poultry do you eat on a weekly basis
The majority said around 25%
4. Do you care where your food comes from.. ie. what country of origin, be it meat or other products
All said that there attitudes had heightened due to the Chineese problems and would prefer to see labeling to where products originated and overwhelmingly prefered US products even over price.
5. Do you trust the USDA to protect & regulate the food supply
Only moderately
6. Do you trust USA producers to provide you with a quality & safe product.. ie. same, less, or more vs foriegn producers
All stated yes and a preference to USA
7. I know everything is expencive but do you feel that beef is a good buy vs other meats
Almost all said yes but thought resturant prices for good quality was high.
8. On a scale of 10-1 (10 is high) where would you rate the quality of the beef you purchase regardless of price and why
The average was 8
9. Do you consider in light of the recent events of the California packing plant, to be a food safety issue or a animal treatment issue or both
Most felt it was both but an animal treatment issue that could lead to a safety issue.
10. In light of the "grain for gas" rather than "grain for livestock" causing feeding costs to escalate to the point where the cost to feed out cattle may cause either a shortage of US origin cattle or extreemly higher food prices, should we as a country just import cheeper foriegn goods and keep making gas or stay with American beef and change energy directions
100% were for lower grain prices as it was affecting all food prices and felt the gas issues had to be resolved differently.
