I'm to meet a horse hauler in Great Falls. I'm coming in from Havre on 87 and I believe they are coming in from the south on 15. Is the Westwood Shopping Area an easy access - logical place to meet up? I've never been "in" Great Falls and I'm not sure if the driver is familar with the city either?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and opinions.

Faster Horses he's almost here - only 8 more sleeps :P :D

its easy access - lots of room in there too. i've swapped lots of bulls out at western livestock auction just west of great falls on 15 headed out of great falls towards shelby - first exit. the fair grounds is usually always open too a guy would probably have the whole place to yourself. if there coming from south on 15 they take the 10 Ave S. exit and take 6th street sw at the first light once on 10th. stay on 6th street sw up thru central ave and it turns into 6th street nw and a couple blocks they'd hit the fairgrounds entrance to their right. you'd come in on old havre hwy (87) and turn right on smelter avenue before you drop down the hill on 15th. smelter ave is right at refinery right coming off breaks (you'll smell it). smelter will turn into 3rd street nw at third light right by pizza hut. go on 3rd til you hit North west bypass and turn right (there will be 3 way light) then just go straight east and look to your left the south and you are skirting the fair grounds. there is an entrance before you come to the next stop light at 6th street nw - if you miss it turn south left on 6th street nw and be ready for other fair entrance on your left.

Thank you Hereford76. Your directions are clear enough for even me to follow! :-) I'll give them the option of either the Fairgrounds or the Sales ring. If they are late I might have to head back through Sweetgrass/Coutts - it'll be a tight squeeze to make Wild Horse. Now I just need spring to arrive between now and next Monday!

You heard that they got NR for smuggling horses into Can. Seems ole Leachman got in his trailer and then authorities caught it when the counted horses heads and horses azzes and found they had one more azz than head

If you're out by western livestock auction "cattleman's cut' is about as good as it gets for dinner---maybe 1/2 mi west of yards, on frontage road---

littlejoe - are you buyin'? just kidding .... thanks for the suggestion.

Sure--if you can catch me in there!---the 'little joe' came from Bonanza, as i've had some outstanding paint horses.

if you choose the sales ring/cattleman's cut option, your buddy's can stay i-15 and blow right by gt falls--take mancheser exit. and if you gotta cross coutts, you're already headed---and can get last 'cheap' fuel @ sweetgrass---huge parking lot at cattleman's cut, by the way

and hey---to a 'snowback,' restaurant'll be cheap anyhow--i go to calgary and vancouver--food is about double, booze is outrageous---absolutely best steak i've had in Canada was @ Patricia--steak pit in bar , fine time there over labor day

The new fella is in my barn ... finally :-) I ran down to Great Falls on Monday and met the hauler at Western Livestock. Very happy with him but I've not been able to give him a lot of time. Our replacement heifers sell tomorrow and our bull sale is Friday. I've been trying to keep the shivering 'California boy" warm and clean so we can take some pictures.

His name is Freckle Face Smoke (Freckle Faced Kid x Bonnie Smoke)
One of the highest earning paint horse stallions in NRCHA history.

.... and he's now part of our breeding program. :cowboy:

Here's a quick page I put together with one picture from Tuesday morning.

Hereford76 - your directions were great - made it through town without a wreck or getting lost - thanks.

littlejoe - I met my buddy, MJ (the maker of Big Muddy's saddles) for lunch and a good visit (the hauler was late). We tried the Cattleman's Cut but it was closed. We ate at a place beside Hoglund's (sorry I know that spelling is wrong). Down and back through Wild Horse - a quick trip'

We are still white but there is one b$%^& of a wind blowing with snow flurries forecasted through the next 6 days ... I couldn't bring myself to look past Tuesday

The heifers and bulls will have a live feed: www.agrimart.ca/cowtown/

Don't forget to go to the Cowboy Bar if you have any time to kill. It's over by the fairgrounds. They have a neat little museum in there with a lot of interesting stuff.
