Well, there isn't really any polite way to say this so here goes........... What in the heck did my family settle in the desert for? I love where I live but i sure saw some cattle country today. I went over to Wyoming to vaccinate calves for a good friend. It was in the Bridger Valley on the western side of the state. Grass and water seemed to go on forever. Looking south towards the Uinta mountains in Utah.

They had two bunches of 300 head each. They run them on private land that is made up of high mountain meadows. The water is sure plentiful.

We rounded up the first bunch to sort and give shots. They have contracted thier calves for sale on October 3rd. Preconditioning is a prerequisite on the contract.

I was mounted well today. Rick also raises nice horses although quite a bit over-priced! (Just kiddin' Rick, when ya gonna quit lurking and join the site?) My pony was a pretty palomino. Ears to ya!

Cut off the cows and waiting to work the calves.

Rick and his wife who is slightly height defiecent! She's there somewhere! :D

On the desert we'd call those things coyote ventilators. In Wyoming they call em' horns!

The cat in the hat is actually a vet from Salt Lake who runs 40 head with Ryan and Rick for the summer. He was well qualified to shoot calves.

Got the first bunch done in good time. Had a bite of crackers, cheese and summer sausage and then went for the others.

Rick bought 20 head of Shorthorn cross cows last fall. They are easy to spot. This steer was as soggy as they come.

Resting ponies watching us finish working calves.

We finished the calves in time to doctor a bull with a bad case of footrot. Stretched out awaiting the DMV. The Dept. of Motor Vehicles said they don't register bulls. So we called the DVM! :D

Flipped over to make it easier to work on him. Had an infected lymph nodes as well. Pretty sure i'll stay away from cottage cheese for a week of two!

Sir lance-a-lot, the large animal vet.

The weather man had claimed the storm wouldn't arrive till Sunday. Clouds came this afternoon and rained on me for 200 miles going home tonight. But I'm sure not hollerin' about it! :D

One last picture of a Shorthorn cross heifer that Rick thinks he'll keep for a replacement. I think she looks just dandy. Enjoy your evening! :D

In a couple of those photos I could see a grasshopper sitting on a pebble on the far ridge. :P

Are those actual peat type meadows H? Where we are, we actually get more production if our grass is slightly on the side of overgrazed by fall as nothing will eat the old bottom the following year. Unless grass is used or burned off the old growth eventually chokes out everything but brush.

Neat pics! That country really took a bad hit during the drought. Looks like you had a great day :D .

Well, you should've kept traveling east, I need your help  . I'm gathering off the forest this weekend, and the public left a gate open, and we've got cattle all over the mountain. There are also cattle from three other allotments mixed in. Should be a fun weekend  :D .

It looks great. My son who lives there has said it's been one of their best years ever. I doubt their grass is that good normally.

Katrina a friend of mine John Robbins told me the forest service were after him to get cattle off the mountain early-he was busy so he said if he didn't do it they would gather and fine him. He said I wrote the $500 cheque and said call me when they are in lol. Ty and I were talking how much fun it would be to load up horses and just go cowboy with eveybody through branding etc. I used to think americans road better horses and could rope better but I've been to a few deals and we all miss lol.

 Yep, it would be worth $500. Actually today went good, and we found almost half of them. It's supposed to possibly snow tomorrow night, so that weather should bring them out... or at least make it so we can track them before it melts off. The trucks are lined up for monday 8am... so we'll see how many we can get. Gotta keep it interesting :) . Just hope they're all accounted for before the calves get shipped the week of October 5.

Sorry Leanin'H for the hijack :-) .
