....... and it ain't over yet.

Had our first calf out of a bought heifer yesterday.

Today while feeding a bred heifer just dropped dead in her tracks. Hadn't seen one like that before, she never even twitched. :shock:

Another bought heifer needed a pull about 6 PM, this calf is a premie and is in the basement for the night. Debbie went for a tour through the heifers that were going to get penned in a couple days as they are not due until the 10th. Her little heifer that survived a bear attack was calving with hind feet sticking out.

A short attempt at pulling (this heifer might weigh 650 with the calf out) and a decision was made to construct a zipper and take it out the side. The pair are doing fine.

Another bought heifer is starting to calve.......

10 PM and supper is ready. Help coming on Monday.

Guess it's that time of year again.

If it is any consolation, a nice young cow belonging to the Kosmo Kid just dropped dead in her tracks about a month ago, for no apparent reason. It is sad losing the cow, but she also had a calf nearly ready to be born.

Hope all your woes are already out of the system, and that the remainder of your calving goes very well. Hang in there. Summer is only about three months away, and then you can start to put up hay. :-)

Well that's too bad. At least it's spring. :wink:
 
About a month ago I had a bull fall thru the ice I hooked a chain around his neck and pulled him out he was quite cold and I hauled him home in the back of my pickup.Got him here and in the barn about 3 hours later he was up eating. Problem was there was another bull under him in the pond.The better of the 2 died.

A retired rancher neighbor told Debbie this morning that if it starts bad, it ends good.

Pulled a dead calf complete with afterbirth out of a bought heifer this morning. Glad there are only 3 left and there weren't more to buy that day. :wink:

Holy crap Dave, if it weren't for bad luck you'd have no luck at all! But then, like you say, you were lucky you didn't buy more. There's that silver lining! Hang in there. :wink:

It's nice when people advertise that their cattle are on a vaccination program and they aren't. :roll:
 
Reminds me of when I quit buying bred heifers.
The only part left is when you find out the guy only had them on shares!
 
As I recall Dave could never refuse a "good deal" and unfortunately one time it rubbed of on me just sitting next to him at a sale. At least I blame him!
The good thing is he is having this trouble while he is still fresh.

You can substitute many things for "on a vaccination program". 😡

Good luck on calving. One thing about those kinda days they make the more normal ones seem like a breeze. Hope the retired neighbor is right... I believe that too.

That sounds auwful Denny. About a week ago I went to break ice on reservoir with tractor and there was a not good looking spot in the dead center of it... Like a cow broke thru the ice. I didint know what to do other than use the loader to break the ice all the way around to keep them from walking out on it... Seemed to work as it only freezes back a couple inches thick at night but I'm hoping there aren't Any underneath the ice- my gutt says its wishful thinking.

Hope you've turned the corner on your problems. You've had more than your share. I like what your neighbor said.

Snowing here again. :cry: Weatherman says it's possible to have 6" of snow on Monday. The winter that started early and won't quit. Here's hoping good weather for everyone!
