Rain

3.75 inches last night in 2 1/2 hours :D :D
This was a long time coming.
how did everyone else do?

  If we got that kind of rain in that short of time, with our type of soils, my basement would be flooded or the house would have floated away    We got 1-1/2" from Thursday night to Sunday. Good, slow, soaking in rain - a very, very welcome event! From June 1 to last Thursday we've only had .3" of rain, temps mostly in the 90's the whole time :( We were tinder dry dry dry dry dry :(

We've had rain off and on for the last two days, I have no idea how much, cuz...........Mr Lilly's dad won't keep his hands off the rain guage!!!! He dumps it, and then don't tell me what he dumped out. Instead of leavin it all day, he'll go by and dump it several times a day, then can't remember what he poured out of it.
All I know is the grounds nice n wet, and I've heard several neighbors say that their tanks that were almost dry are now full......woohooo!!!!!

Glad to hear ya'll got some rain TeamRoper I thought it looked like you n HayMaker were gittin some.

We finally missed a rain storm.. Our ponds on th farm are all already filled and there were many low areas that had standing water... We are kind of hoping for a drying period so folks don't have to run the driers to long... I am hoping for some drying so we can get in there with the balers and shreaders and pick up 1000 bales of stalks for some feed... That will be a fun few days. Should have good yields this year unlike last year, 3-4 bales an acre should be within reach.

Il Rancher - are your stalks dry enough to bale without spoiling? I'm thinking of trying to pick ours up with the old forage harvester, right behind the combine, and blowing it in a pile.

We did it many years ago and the stalks were green enough that the stuff actually fermented and ensiled. Although it was meant for bedding, the cows ended up eating most of it. It smelled like silage. Males for very cheap feed. And helps provide filler so my little Black Angus don't get so rolly-poley!

Time for a "YOURS" and "HIS" Rain Guages!
May stop hard feelings

about 4" in an hour...rain was sideways for awhile...we'd just gotten in off the horses about a half hour before it hit, came in fast and swift. too much in too short of time.

Maple leaf,

God willing they will be dry enough. They were last year, still have about 10-15 bales left that we baled last october.. Gotta be carefull because you are right, they can be too wet..

The smart thing to do would be to spend some money putting some fence around the 1100 acres of crop ground and just grazing the stalks but the plow jockeys et all nervous and some of our bottom ground really does need to be chiseled in the fall so we are going this route until the farm ground is ours. When the crop folks want to pay the rent on th ground they are paying it is hard to say no...

I think stalks are great belly filler as long as they have something else to give them the energy. Stalks and Distillers/glutten are getting popular as you can "make" hay that is just as good as Alfalfa for half the price.. The one problem is that the cows don't consume the BT corn stalks nearly as well as the non BT stalks, or so the old timers tell me...

We are getting something called a Loftness stalk windrower that takes either 15 or 20 feet of stalks, shreds them up and puts them in a nice little windrow for your baller. Some good things and some bad things will it, trying to decide if the good outweighs the bad.

Oh, our stalks are almost allways real dry but it is a risk... That is why I don't like relying on this for 100% of my gut fill as a rainy October would be very bad indeed. Lucky for us we can put up the feed FAST.

Woo hooo just heard, we got right at 3 inches of rain last night durin the night. I knew it'd rained quite a bit, but heck, I slept thru it. The bottoms out(creeks outta banks floodin the pasture) This is a good thang since it hasn't done that in almost 2 years. Means water'll be standin in the pasture over night tonight and into tomorrow before it receeds. Bunch of it's gonna soak in. yeahhhhhhh
