Wondering about raiseing wheat how much are the inputs per acre ruffly.

I am thinking if I can raise some grains then feed the straw with by-products it will improve my total bottom line or am I just dreaming..

Denny, we feed straw to our fats..... We grind it... It tones down our alfalfla...... Ask around......... We treated our wheat this year for smut (I think) and put fertilizer with it to plant...... I think Cal does his differant too. So there is alot of choices.........

Not much wheat grown around here but the seed corn guys use it in their rotations to break disease cycle and to make sure no volunteer corn is hanging around.... Neighbor bales a bunch a year and feeds it in round bale feeders to his cows while giving them byproducts and seedcorn silage for extra energy.. He has the contract on the seed corn sialge so it is cheap feed for him..,

I would imagine if you ground it and mixed it like Katrina said it would make a nice feed.. God knows we do the same with cornstalks and distillers.

Lots of cows have been wintered in this country with Wheat straw and some grain. I don't cause i don't have any straw but it can help cut wintering cost. It is felt that wheat is about the cheapest crop to grow . Drill it in and spray with 2-4-D and your good to go.

I would hate to guess what it costs guys around here to grow a crop of wheat. They pretty well all have high clearance sprayers and they spend the summer spraying the fields. By fall they have permanent tram lines in the crop. I ll stick to growing Barley, and Canola. No shortage of straw up here this year but the yield sure wasnt there. Had enough straw for a 100 bushel acre crop of barley but only got around 30 bushels of barley per acre and its light.

Same problem with my barley weighs about 44lbs but if you want a lower imput crop Denny Oats is a good choice less imputs than wheat. Also makes good greenfeed if you are short of feed and good Oats for Milling are always in demand. Easier to combine and lots of straw for baling.
