At what point do you refill your semen tanks?
currently mine shows about 1/2 full as measured by a plastic stick, would hate to lose semen because it gets too low.
Supposedly will weigh 59.5 pounds full, would weight be more accurate than one of these nitrogen measuring sticks that you see advertised?
Would rather err on the safe side than lose

What are most of you paying for liquid nitrogen?

Thanks
ED

Mine had 9 centimeters in it when they filled on Monday was getting awefully low I thought but they said it was fine.

As long as any shows on the dipstick you are ok but living dangerously. Mine are by the front door-I just pick them up every couple days and check. When they fail they start to frost up. I had a buddy forgot his and it went dry so I tortured him by adding up the vallue of semen as we threw it out. The only good thing about it was he lost a bunch of EXT almost made it worthwhile.

The nitrogen itself in the liquid form is 320 degrees below zero, and the gas is 270, near the liquid. The straws in the top will be ok on low level if the tank is not opened. It may show up later when AI is all done and your conception rate is not great. It could be the top straws through poor handling or low tank may be the cause.

I have had tanks delivered here to fill on vapors, never had a good feeling when you hear the canes and straws crackling on the filling procedure. Try to not go below 4 inches, and you and the cows can sleep well.

Speaking of straws crackleing. I inventoryed a tank a man purchsed with semen in it. About half of the straws broke while trying to read them. Some were dry and some print was so faint that I could not read them.

I think the tank had went dry at one point and re fillled keeping the thawed semen in it. Some canes were actually empty..

One bad winter the rep could not get to are place. We got another 3 day blizzird, checked the tank it did not read on the stick. call a guy about 4 mile north he had 4 tanks and all where full. The gravel roads were not open, and the snow was to deep to move with a tractor 12 to 14 foot drifts. So we had to drag the tank over the drifts about a 1/2 mile to an oil road that was open then had freind that could get out pick me drive the 4 mile to other freinds house, drag the tank to his barn & dumped some off the top all 4 of his tanks. O what fun, anyway the semen was all good but it was 20 to 30 below out side,& the tank was in a unheated barn, this may have saved the semen. We now drive about 60 mile to a bull stud to fill the tank, will let it get down to 5 to 10 cm before we refill, as a rule we get over 80% conception Somebulls we a 100% with so I think it can get lower than most people think & still be ok.
