Great pictures. I've got one that is going to need the same treatment one of these years soon. It's only been pumping water since around 1920 or so. The gears are getting pretty worn along with the bearings. Dad knew when Granddad put it up but I don't remember what he told me. Some of the history you loose with the passing of generations.

great pics, as always  how many windmills do you have on your ranch? i really don't know much about windmills, never been around them. I'm gonna say this, just so those darn canucks don't jump all over me...i do know how they work, but know much about them when it comes to maintance. its nice to see them still in action, very few still going in this neck of the woods.

We have sixty windmills, depending heavily on them to water our cattle. It is a never ending job keeping them all re-leathered and in working order. A lot of it we do ourselves, but some windmill work is hired done because a boom truck makes the job so much easier.

60 windmills would take quite a bit of time to keep them working. We used to depend a lot more on windmills but have went to solar and pipelines off of good wells that have electricity to them. The solar pumps work good on shallow wells for summer water. It seem like in the later part of July and August when the cattle need a lot of water we don't get enough wind but the solar pumps will pump water every day. One of my pipeline systems provides partial or all of the water for eight pastures. Any time you have to pump water for cattle it take constant monitoring and maintenance.
