This is what I did this afternoon... Nothing compares to a wild Saskatoon pie!

We were checking the pasture, and found that the Saskatoon bushes by the road were loaded with berries. We dropped off the mineral, and I went back with bucket in hand. A half an hour later, I had enough for two pies. MMMM....... Wild Saskatoons are not consistent, and it's been at least five years since we've had a crop, so these pies just don't come along every day.

Another thing that is just as special is the location of the bushes. Everybody around here keeps it a big secret when they find a good patch. If you ask them where they pick berries, the directions you get will be only within a mile or two of the actual location. If you're lucky.

A Saskatoon is basically a blueberry with attitude. :D :D

They grow on bushes that can get 10 feet high, and they are similar to blueberry, but with a much sharper flavour. You can get tame Saskatoons now as well. U Pick Saskatoon farms are all over the place in this part of the country. They're more reliable, and bigger than the wild ones, but the wild ones have a little sharper taste, IMO.

Which is why a wild berry pie is the tops in my book.

Oh ya, the pie is gone now....... poor thing never stood a chance. :D :D :D :D One more in the freezer to cook tomorrow. After that, who knows when we'll get more.

I bet they are soooo yummy. This thread reminds me of the last
time I picked wild gooseberries. They are hard to pick as the
bush is full of thorns. My sister-in-law and I picked 'em and it
takes quite a bit to make a pie. We got to the house, washed
the gooseberries and put them on the stove to cook...and then...
the worms started coming to the top. YUK. My sister-in-law
was so mad, she said, "that's the LAST time I do that."
And it was.

I had to google to find out what they even look like. Similar lookin to a blue berry. What do they taste like? When you make a pie..do you remove the seed? Or are they small? No idea here.

What do they taste like?

HEAVEN :D

Hmmmm...I don't like blueberries.

When you say "sharper flavor" do you mean tartness?

That's kinda how our wild plums are...they smell like plums when your cookin em...but they are ALOT tarter than plums you'd buy or on a plum tree that you'd plant.

I like to park a saddle horse in a good patch of stoons and eat them right off the tree. One thing we have up here is alot of wild berries -I think my favorite is those little wild stawberries-I found a patch back in the bush once-we backpacked the kids in there had a weinie roast and grazed our desert.

We've got Saskatoons, chokecherries, cranberries (they're nothing like the tame ones), currents, pincherries, blueberries (if you travel a bit), and also wild strawberries. Wild strawberries are so little! But they pack a punch.

I googled dewberries. They're a lot like blackberries? Raspberries are as close as I've gotten to blackberries, so I don't even know much about them either. Do they make good jam?

As for the flavour, Saskatoons are not exactly like blueberries, but that's the closest description I can think of. They are a bit more tart, and the flavour is stronger. A blueberry tastes kind of bland next to a saskatoon.

We have plenty of Saskatoon's but my favorite are wild raspberries. They are prolific in the foothills where the tree line starts.
