Anyone ever see or feed silage to sows? Some of our sows are penned next to calves getting silage. The sows eat the silage. I read an article that said you could feed sows 12 to 14 pounds a day and supplement protein.

Any thoughts on this? .

Our silage cost is about 2.5 cents a pound. Where corn is about 8 cents if we buy it.

We have about 7 acres in a wet bottom we were trying to determine whether to pick it by hand or turn the hogs and some calves in on it.

Again anyone ever feed silage to sows?

I have a book from high school that say's you can feed them 10-14 lbs a day with 1 1/2 #s of protein supplement. I'm thinking of giving it a try we also get wet distillars syrup free so I may just mix it in the feeder wagon.

Its worth a try.

Check out links on the distillers. I read one place where it said they did not know why but it tended to reduce growth rates.

We have about 300 ton of silage and starting tomorrow we are going to introduce silage into their diets, until we work them up to that 12/14 pounds a day.

Thanks for the info.

I fed out 160 feeder pigs on wet distillars alone but they did grow slow. I had gotten it for free so time was'nt such an issue. Once they got over 120 pounds they grew on it better. They were fat but did grow slower..
