Anybody have any experience with using them? There's a sale next wekend that has some in their sale. I have been thinking of trying one with the commercial cows.
I've got a 1/4 Simmental 3/4 Angus bull and I like his calves a lot. I plan on getting another one from the same breeder this spring. Be careful though, there are a lot of weenie bulls in both breeds. Make sure the bulls are POWER bulls. That's just my opinion, but it's sure what I look for.
We are looking for something to add some pounds, but I dont want too much Sim influence in replacement heifers. I would like to get a 1/2 AN x 1/2 SM to put on a group of An X cows, predominantly Angus x Herefords.
Actually the ones I like the most are looking pretty calving ease, which are sired by Red Angus bulls.
Do some research on the sire and dam and make sure that they are complimentary to each other. The worst thing in a crossbred bull (or purebred) is to have a fire and ice mating. You will gat some that are just like the Sim and some like the Angus.
They work pretty good for alot of people- we raise a few out of our own cows for clean up bulls. The problem up here is alot of simmX bulls the breeders peddle are out of Simmy cows that can't produce a saleable Simmental bull. They definately arewn't the ruination of the cattle business like some would suggest.
Years ago we used several 1/2 Hereford 1/2 simmi bulls for awhile- Sure raised some beautiful big muscled calves- and the heifers out of the black cows made good looking baldy cows-- but did have some calving problems and some dummy calves when born...The angus bulls took care of both problems...
Few years ago I bought a 1/4 simmi 3/4 angus bull- but he only lasted 2 seasons as he got mean and would come hunting you--which I think came from the fact he was a California Traveler son.....Was as easy calving as the light birthweight fullblood angus bulls...
A friend of mine has a 1/2 dozen of them he likes the calves as they weighed up pretty well.He sells all the calves keeps his baldy heifers for replacements..
