Since we have changed our haying operation, we were needing a rake. There is a Sitrex rake for sale, fairly new, hasn't been used much, 12 wheel. They want $5800 cash for it. A local dealership is selling it on consignment. I looked up a discussion on rakes on this site and there were mixed reviews. I asked the dealership about some people not liking them, and he said they have problems plugging up in irrigated alfalfa hay but in grass hay they are great, dryland or irrigated grass hay. We don't have irrigated alfalfa hay. We have grass hay but some of it can be irrigated.


So what are the thoughts here? Is there a better rake? Is this one priced fairly? I did check....new they are about $14,000 and this
one does look new. Our swather is 14'. Is the 12 wheel one what we should be looking at?

I've got a newer 9 wheel that has hydraulic fold on it but the tires skid it hasn't raked 600 acres and one tire blew it runs crooked in the field and the tires tear up sod it picks up hay nicely but I wish the tires didn't skid like they do. I should call and complain.
 
We have a New Holland v-rake which is a Sitrex with NH paint and so far quite like it. So far. But it only has one crop behind it.

Do they all do that? :shock:

The factory sent me a brace/bracket to put on as they were having problems with them breaking in half where they bolt the sections together..It has its issues

How old is your rake? How will we find out if this is one they had problems with? Get the serial number?
 
I read some where that a wheel rake is a waste of good iron. Been around several types and never cared for any of them. Best move we made was going to a Vermeer R2800.

I bought it new in August of 2014 its a newer model 9 wheel in line

Update on the rake: He didn't like it. Too tippy and we have rolling hills. It was fairly narrow and that made it not good for our
situation. He had them bring out a Vermeer Cart Wheel Rake (I guess that is the proper term) and it was wider, so therefore
not as tippy, but hard to adjust. Soooo.....he has done a U-turn and is looking at a 3 wheel smaller rake. We missed one that sold for $200....:-).
Oh well, lots of rakes out there.
