So, it's been a very difficult decision, but we have decided to sell our farm in Alberta. It's been 2 plus years in making the choice, but we're moving forward with no regrets.

Enough of that, we went on a little holiday into southern BC last week, to relax, and also look at farms for sale in a climate that has 7 months of growing season instead of winter. Spent 10 days in 25-30 degree weather (Canadian degrees of course), which was fantastic. Had t-shirts on hiking in the mountains and even sunburnt our necks and ears a couple of days. Orchard trees were blooming in Osoyoos, and grass was popping up all over. Sure was nice to see after the winter we've had in Alberta. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Saw some real pretty ranch country over the Sidley Mountain Range between Rock Creek and Osoyoos. In 30 miles you go from desertous orchard country, Osoyoos being known as "Canada's Only Desert", to alpine forest grasslands.

The real Rock Creek, in Rock Creek. White stones on the banks are dolomite which is laying around all of the creeks in the area. Sure sign of calcium in the soil. Bonus.

Some nice flat irrigated hayland.

Drinking straight out of the Kettle River near Midway, BC. Had my testing equipment along and all of the creeks/rivers I tested were cleaner than tap water in Alberta.

More Kettle River views. Locals were laughing at me because I kept taking pictures of water and walking the shores. Sure was nice and relaxing.

Hiking some back country near Midway.....in t-shirts......getting sunburnt. Edge of the logged area is the US border. I had to stick a toe over, just cause I could. Was kinda worried that Toby Keith might jump out of the timber and curb stomp me.

Copper Eagle Bakery in Greenwood, BC. Old copper mining town with quite a history. And the biggest cinnamon buns these farm kids had ever seen.

Along the Granby River near Grand Forks, BC. Motel was right on the banks, so we ate breakfast at a picnic table listening to the river.

Hotel in Osoyoos on the shores of Osoyoos Lake. Was nice being there before tourist season kicks in. Rooms were half price and nobody around. Coffee with this view somehow tastes better.

Kids really enjoyed the ducks that seem to be regular guests at the hotel.

Have a great day all.

late may of 03 i went up and looked at a ranch right close to beaverdell, bc. think it was called west kettle ranch or something. i remember they had just recently won a stewarship award for erosion control on their banks of the kettle or west kettle river i can't remember. it was 1200 deeded acres almost all irrigated with over 300,000 acres of crown lease for summer range. the guys took me up on a hogback and tried to show it and it was crazy. nothing but trees. i would have got closterfobic there. said they would get multiple grow operations out in the crown land and had actually rode up into one one year and the grower was looking at him down the scope of a rifle. said he told the guy not to shoot and just rode out of their with his daughter. they only run cows that had enough hay production for and wintered them in this lot amonst maybe a half cleared lot of i think pine with a feed bunk the length of it on one side. they stayed there all the time outside of when they could go to crown lease. anyhow - wasn't shortly after the border and bse deal hit and put an end to that... things changed in a hurry for the guys with cattle up there.

i would like to retire to osoyoos. looked like a neat place. some kind of festival going on when i came home thru there. seems like they were growing everything even cantelope if i remember right?

neat pictures. good luck with whatever you do!

Beaverdell can be a bit western from what I hear.

Little more civilized around Rock Creek and Midway. But same concept, summer most people graze the crown land on the ranges, grow hay in the valley bottoms, then move the cows there for winter. Lots of options there though with a growing season like that. Hay, grains, fruit, veggies. If you can't grow stuff there you have a black thumb.

Different world from where we are now, with it's own set of challenges.

We looked at 10 or 11 on a 9 day trip, mostly staying in motels/hotels, and eating restaurant food. We tried to get kitchenettes wherever we stayed, and buy groceries, but in small towns it's hard to always do that. We eat pretty clean, so after a couple of days the kids were real tired of restaurant food, and we were too. Next time we go to try and narrow the search for a place, we'll go it alone and leave kids with Grandma and Grampa.

We found some real nice places north of Grand Forks in the North Fork valley, and north of Rock Creek. Saw everything from bare land to fully operational places. Some just irrigated hay farms, some straight cow operations, some with a little bit of everything from corn to strawberries.

Gotta thank you GCreek, for all the advice about where to look. You were right about it all from what I've seen thus far. Once we get a deal in place and close to finalized for our land, we intend to put an offer in on one out there. Want to be moved this summer if we can make it all come together.

I met as old rancher from Osoyoos at a conference in Calgary. Here was there to pick up a conservation award. The outfit he had made a deal with to sell his place and lease it back was giving him this award and then gave him notice his lease was canceled. :?

Wishing you the best on your move. I know it was probably a tough decision to pick up and move after the work you put into you operation. Besides you will look silly when this "Global warming" thing kicks in and Hardisty is the Coconut Capital of North America.

Good luck in the "Land of Fruits and Nuts" and Gcreek. :D

Altho he lives in another world. :D

Congrats PC. A big and scary decision I am sure, but if it is a family one, it will be great. I think there is real opportunity in BC for ranching/farming.
Alberta's loss.
