Neat pictures~~did you leave any oats in swaths? I tried that--and was amazed~~maybe 3 acres of oats and peas per bull, for the winter. dryland, seeded july.

Wintered fat, not much waste, lotsa rough fescue, Idaho fescue in field---it's like they balanced their own ration and it lasted for months....

These oats are a cover crop over some new alfalfa. I debated cutting them, but it was wet and I didn't want to leave the swaths laying on the alfalfa for weeks waiting for it to dry. We have swath grazed a lot in the past and it is a great way to winter feed. We have moved more to standing corn the last couple of years, due to its ability to handle higher snow load and production of days per acre, but it is WAY more expensive than a good mixed oat/barley/fall rye/wintertriticale/hairy vetch swath grazing mix.

It does get warm here.
And our 35° cold is pretty dang cold.
Last year we had 3 real cold days. One was 11° but real dry air, sunny and no wind. The next day was 35° and cloudy and our normal 75% humidity.
The 11 was pleasant and I didn't even have a jacket, the 35 I froze in.
I'll take 90° any day though. Under 72 and I start getting a little cool.

90 degrees? You can have it. I'd rather have 20 degrees, no wind and no humidity. We get lots of those days in winter. Not bad to be out in.

The days I hate here are the ones in the upper 30s to lower 40s with 30 mph wind and rain blowing - - - we get a few each year and luckly for my cows I have enough space in the loafing shed I can put out a few square bales of hay and they get to stay inside and wait it out.

90 with about 70% humidity are nice days for us. We can get some tough ones.
Nights that it's still 80 or more at 10:00 will let you know that some hot weather is setting in.

Yep 35 with humidity will freeze me to death, I know guys laugh at that but until you've experienced it you have no idea.

We're having a nice dry November. It's really nice starting calves in the dry and not drizzle and mud and wet air. Makes a world of diffrence.
