Northern Beef Packers, the long-awaited beef packing plant in South Dakota, appears to have cleared one of the last remaining hurdles to begin operations. Officials report that it has the financing in place to begin beef slaughter operations within the next month. Critics contend similar announcements have been made in the past. The plant is expected to operate one shift and process 1,500 head/day. Given its size, we expect the plant to have no noticeable impact on US beef operating fundamentals.
