I was watching Letterman ('cause the channel was coming in) a couple nights ago and he had Claire Danes on as a guest. She is an actress portraying Temple Grandin in an upcoming movie.

Dave was interviewing her about the movie and this gal was doing pretty well explaining about Dr Grandin's autisim and all. When the subject of a squeeze chute was brought up, Dave asked Ms Dane what a squeeze chute was. She replied it was like a "torture chamber" for cows.   I was thinking I should definitely go see this movie, but that statement did it for me.

Sad thing is most of the people watching Letterman will have no idea what it is either, and will now believe Ms. Dane's remarks.

Reminds me of the commercials that were run on TV here in AZ a couple of years ago when the animal rights people wanted to outlaw farrowing crates because they were "offensive" to the animals. I guess buckets of dead piglets are ok?

I now have information that I did not hear the exchange between Letterman and Ms Danes accurately. If so, I apologize and stand corrected. Here is a link to a thread I started at NAT.

HBO had a documentary on the other night. "Death on a Factory Farm" It was some guy video taping what was going on in a large hog farm. The whole time he was just trying to get a video of them hanging a downer sow. The owners went to court and were only found guilty on one charge of miss handling small pigs and had to pay a 250 dollar fine and take a class on low stress handeling. He guy that did the video taping admitted that he thought hogs should be treated the same way as dogs.

Thanks lonecowboy. I know I certainly don't like it when ranchers are the target of false or unjust accusations. "Thou shalt not bear false witness" applies to everyone, including me.

Chapter 3 "The Squeeze Machine", Paragraph 5, "I asked Aunt Ann to press the squeeze sides against me and to close the head restraint bars around my neck. I hoped it would calm my anxiety. At first there were a few monments of sheer panic as I stiffened up and tried to pull away from the pressure, but I couldn't get away because my head was locked in, Five seconds later I felt a wave of relaxation, and about thiry minutes later I asked Aunt Ann to release me."

Nobody thought of using their chute for that, or have they?
