I am a senior at The Ohio State University majoring in Animal Science with a Farm Management minor. I am seeking an internship with a cow/calf operation. My background includes growing up on a small farm in Ohio with horses and show steers for livestock. I have shown horses all my life and through high school competed in High School Rodeo qualifying for nationals twice. My cattle experience is low but this is why I am so eager to find such internship. My production experience comes from a 2,600 sow unit in southwest Ohio. I have the ability to learn very quickly and can hold up with the best of men. If there is anyone interested in more information, I can send my resumé.

Maybe I am old fashioned - but why does everyone want an "internship" when in fact it is a "job"

Is it just me or am I being old fadshioned again?

By the way - good luck to you on that job search!

My guess would be that it's called an internship because it's to be a learning experience that directly supplements the academic part of the student's education.

I've fairly recently completed the academics for a program a a local college but have been too negligent to finish it by doing the 220 hr. internship required for getting the degree. Just lazy on my part.

Good luck Amanda and I hope you find just the right spot to finish up this step in your journey!

I would love to hire you for your internship, only problem is I imagine you would like to make more than I could afford to pay you, which would be basically nothing. I can't hardly afford to pay myself. :???: Then again, I am probably over paid for what I do.

In all seriousness, good luck in your search. Nice to see young people wanting to learn the industry.

I missed that opportunity!!!!! I was thinking earlier that if this internship was agriculturally oriented that he could complete it in less than a week.

I really like your positive spin on it! :-)

It seems a real description of what an internship on a farm/ranch really means and/or involves.

Surely it would be more beneficial for the intern if the rancher is willing and able to do some good teaching while the work is being accomplished.

Amanda, the degree of importance you place on finding a place where there is some horse showing involved may affect your choices, as it looks to me like many places where that is done often do not involve much real ranching work, due to time needed for the ranch work, and time for working with the horses both being quite high. If that means a lot to you, I'm sure you can find a place, but like so much in life, it may not be easy.

Best of luck for experiences which broaden your knowledge base and give you some great opportunities to see 'the everyday, real world' of ranching.

I do not have a preference in where I travel to gain the experience. Horse showing does not play a role in my decision it was merely a slight description of my horse background inferring my horsemanship skills. I also have the knowledge and experience working cattle from competing in rodeo which involves me and my handling of a rope and calves. I may not know exactly what it's like personally to work the everyday, real world ranch work but I am more than willing and ambitious to learn.

Just driving through that area a few times shows it will be a beautiful place for those interns to get some experience and education.

I have a pre-Veterinary student grand daughter who probably will be looking for internship soon, but is working in a lab right now. Not sure what Vet students need to look for as an internship, either.

I have noticed the 'grandpa' on this ranch takes a little more time to explain the why's of what we do to things the way we do them to our younger generation than he did to their dads'!

Just a perspective from perhaps one of the few other young people on this site:

I am also getting an "internship" this summer. More like an unpaid job is the correct term for it. However, in my case I have decided to modify my ultimate education goals. But since my degree will fall well outside of the agricultural sector, I am taking on an agricultural internship to continue learning new things about raising cattle. Plus, I will get someone else's spin on the "right" way to do it.

Although it's a job and I will not be getting rich, I will have no room/board expense and I can afford to do so that this particular summer. So for the sake of education and incalcuably valuable contacts, it's worth it.
