swamp/swath

Some irrigated alfalfa, lots more down than up. Ma Nature has started working over the wheat, and the annual crop hay is yet to be planted. Can't check cattle, as they have disappeared into a forest. How about your neck of the woods?

We're doing our first cut now in Southern BC. Folks closer to the West Coast around Abbotsford have 2' of growth on their second cut from what I hear. It's irrigated of course. Damn hot and dry. We wouldn't have much if we didn't have water on tap.

Some cut just moved the baler to the field tonight and got a shower on the way up town. On way home lightening started a fire in my son's yard but didn't burn much.

Hot and dry here, not much of a crop and just south of us in Montana there is even less.

Wet here.....baled some weed free bales mon or tues......cut some grass yesterday and got rained out in one area .....moved 5 miles away and cut. Going to take a few days for that to dry....

We're gaining, good drying weather now. 2 more weeks like this and we will have made up for the extra fed in May because it was too wet to turn out... Looking for a little extra protein from the skeeters in the bale this year. Supposed to rain again Thursday or sooner.

200 plus bales made most registered DRY on the monitor which is under 7%.. Even starting early. Some hay mowed yesterday and raked and baled today was 12 to 14%

What moisture do you all like to bale at?

I like the 12-14. Would rather be dryer than wetter than 14 though. But I don't bale any grass this is usually sudan or forage sorghum which always has green wet joints in it and if baled wetter than that seems always to get a bit warm and little moldy before feeding. Cows always eat it but doesn't look the best and sometimes get those football bales after they set a while. I baled a pivot of oat-pea hay last week. Got 759 big round and 1525 small square bales on a 120 acre pivot. I baled them mostly during the day when it was hot. It would have taken me two weeks to get it all baled up when baling conditions were perfect. The windrows were big and going fast enough didn't lose that much. What type of moisture sensor do you run? I don't have one in the baler just a probe that rattles around the tractor cab.

We are started baling here, doesn't look like we'll be breaking the budget on twine this year.

The monitor is built into the Vermeer N

Speaking of the new Vermeer.... Today was the maiden voyage for ours. Fought with it for 16 bales then went back and got the old JD 566 to finish off. Mechanic coming tomorrow. Tailgate cycles fine but wont finish to close the locks. Well, it closes eventually but can take upwards of 2 minutes to pull the polish rod in the last inch and a half or so.

Mechanic was out today, looks like the valve block beside the left baler tire that feeds the tailgate cylinders is defective and doesn't like to allow the last of the oil to evacuate the cylinder.

Silver, Your tractor and baler are not on the same page, but I don't know why not. John Deere has a restrictor in one line, and if that's backward, the gate won't shut. Good luck figuring it out.

My son and his small crew have gotten up about 1200 bales, some put up a little on the damp side. Two new JD 569s. One works flawlessly. The other has problems with the net wrap, bale size, monitor, gate latches both broke, over size buzzer comes on way early and stays on, according to who's running it. Some electrical BS. Tech supposed to come look at it today. Funny thing is, it's the baler on a blue tractor the works fine.

Its the Vermeer that is giving grief, the old JD baler just keeps on ticking. New valve block for the Vermeer should be arriving with mechanic tomorrow.

A woman would try hooking the problem baler on the blue tractor and seeing if that stopped the problems.
