Everything about them on the net looks like a very promising outcross for a commercial herd. But all of the webpages look really flashy :) Kinda makes the warning lights come on.

Can't tell you a darn thing, as I don't know of any Beefmaster cattle anywhere around here. That tells me something right there.

I think for sask I'm gonna stick with the angus or angus galloway. I think it's a good idea to buy from the established breeders in the area. You can see how they are doing in that environment, But I sure like the look of those Beefmasters. They are pretty :)

Definately a breed intended for warmer climates. First developed from the Brahman, Shorthorn and Hereford breeds. To quote the Beefmaster Breeders United web-site:

The new breed was developed on what has become known as the Six Essentials - Weight, Conformation, Milking Ability, Fertility, Hardiness and Disposition. Beefmasters are the only beef breed specifically developed to excel in these important economic traits.

Now that might be stretching it a little. My dear ol' dad used a Beefmaster bull for a couple of years in Colorado, during his many experiments in genetics. Those calves would sure weigh nice at weaning. They just weren't all that practical for the mountains. However, the founder of the breed, Mr. Lasater, lived in eastern Colorado. Maybe he's originally from Texas?

Northern Rancher, I'm wondering if you've ever made a sale on this here forum? You're always kind enough to offer folks the chance to bid on your stock!

Well if I don't think they're worth buying I doubt anybody else ever will now will they lol. Actually I have done some business off of here if you must know lol. I'm pretty sure Judith isn't going to be buying any rodeo stock lol.

I was being a smart bum about the pretty :) I was expecting to get a zillion posts on function over looks :) No one took the bait! Northern knows darn well that as soon as I get to Sask. I fully intend to torment him endlessly with cow questions. Who better to talk to about cows than the AI guy ! He sees so many herds, with any luck I'll be able to avoid a few pitfalls in the cattle business. Could be a problem though after I've been at Mr's Gregs helping her finish those bottles of homemade! The cows might be pretty blurry and I could end up bring home a trailer load of pigs!

Don't worry I will give the province fair warning! I am flying in to see a couple places early next week. One is that 40 acre parcel I told you about earlier and there are a couple just out of Saskatoon. What are the Cree reservations like up your way? There are some better sized parcels, on Cree land. I would be worried about the constant flip floping when leasing from a band. Some are better than others. I rented some Stolo (SP?) Land to run the horses couple years back and it was a really good situation.

Years ago different ones used to run beefmasters in southern AB. Now its all Black Baldys,Black Angus or Herefords for the most part.

Somewhere around here I have Lasaters book about the 6 estentials and Tom's beliefs and methods of forming the breed. I would say it was an interesting read and an interesting philo, not one I agree with 100% but that is okay, every operation is going to have to do some things different. Always thought the breed was interesting but really had no desire to have anything with any Zebu blood in it... Maybe if I lived further south I would think differently.
