Well I'm fixin to sit down and make out my shoppin list for Turkey Day Dinner. Gonna make a trip into town this afternoon n git er done. I was just wondering, besides the usual, Turkey, Dressin/stuffin, mashed taters ........punkin pie.....what are some of the side dishes you all serve along with your Thanksgiving Turkey?

Lilly,
Did my shopping Sunday.
The turkey I bought was a shur-fine for 59 cents a pound. They did have some butterballs for 97 cents. Got my sweet taters for sweet taters and brown sugar and marshmellows on top with lots of butter. Stuffing- I put a couple of cans of mushrooms in mine... mash taters and turkey gravy. And cranberrys... I noticed that the sacks are smaller this year but the price has stayed the same. And I will make a salad with fruit cocktail, manderin oranges, cottage cheese, a box of jello and cool whip and I don't make pumpkin pie. My boys can eat a pumkin pie by themsleves in one sitting, so I make my pie by the 9x12 pan. And for the grownups I have a bottle of homemade rhubarb wine.....
Nothing special.......

The reason I asked is cuz I ended up with havin to do the side dishes this year. Mother In Law is cookin the Turkey and Dressin.

I just talked to her and she's also doin fruit salad.....apples, nanners, oranges, grapes, sprinkled with powdered sugar n let it git all juicy together.

I hafta make about 4 punkin pies.....just so there's some left over for later. that's my favorite part of Thanksgivin dinner. I'll prolly make a buttermilk and coconut pie as well.

corn casserole.

1 stick butter (or margarine)
1 can cream style corn
1 can whole kernel corn (drain 1/2 of the juice)
1 cup sour cream
1 8-oz box Jiffy cornbread muffin mix
1 egg, beaten

Mix all ingredients & bake at 350 for 1 hour. Easy & yummy!

Lilly, No sweet tater pie??? My cousins from texas came for thanksgiving one year and made that for us...... Was way to sweet for my liking...
Do you ever use carrots instead of pumpkin for your pies?? It's good...
Let me think of some salads........
What's the one with grated cranberries, apples and marshmellows??? Mom use to make it at home..
How about a plain lettce salad or ceasear salad??
Creamed green beans with shoe string potatoes on top..

Cranberry Salad, is one of our favorites. You take cranberries and grind them up in a food processor and put them in a bowl over night with some sugar. We like things tart so we dont use too much sugar. Next morning put the cranberrys in a strainer and let stand for about an hour and let the juice run out. while you are waiting for the cranberrys to drain chop some pecans, and slice some grapes. Mix the cranberries, pecans, and grapes with a carton of cool whip and if you like toss in a few marshmellows. Good stuff with ham or turkey. If anyone wants the recipe with the measurements and everything just holler and I will get it on here.

am working thanksgiving day til 7 p.m., so will be sending the hubby and kids to sis-in-laws house to enjoy the festivities!! However, I will be attempting to make a nice-sized (7 1/4#) prime rib for us and a few friends on wednesday!!!

Anyone got a good recipe for a rub to put on the prime rib??? Wish me luck!! gonna have baked taters, tossed salad, deviled eggs and lots of pie!! any takers of leftovers???

My favorite side dish, beside a good fruit salad and lots of black olives, is that green bean dish with the french fried onions on the top. Growing up Mom never made it, but my Aunt Renee does, and it's yum. Now married into the Lazy Ace family they make it and I could founder on it alone.

I usually contribute a dessert or two---Chocolate Pecan Pie and/or Tollhouse Pie.

I am a bad Thanksgiving feaster...I could easily do with stuffing, sweet pototos, and pumpkin pie. I am also on the take it or leave it list with the turkey, but would rather have the big bird rather than a plant protein source! Prime Rib or brisket is my true choice, but generally eat was is placed before me.

nenmrancher: would you please post your recipe????

Cheers---

TTB

Ranchwife, awhile ago someone asked how to do Prime Rib.....Tap gave his recipe,we've used it over and over, for all roasts ,deer included, its now our very favorite recipe...maybe if you ask nice Tap will post it again.

Yes mam we'll take the leftovers...please you and Cowboyup deliver it to us :)

We are going to my folks house for Thanksgiving so mom is doing the cooking and her boys are doing the eating, just how she likes it, lol. If I can remember the dinner right it is generally Turkey, Mashed taters, sweat potatoes with a brown suger glaze, a standard bread stuffing, cranberries, green beans I think and than i believe she makes some sort of Oyster thing that I have had once or twice (Not a huge fan although it is not bad) and I think she makes brussel sprouts but I won't touch those. For desert, Pumpklin pie, Apple pie and a chocolate pie that is just freaking awesome (Guess which one I am eating  )..

I actually prefer to cook the dinner myself but we have to rotate through the families and it will be nice to see my brother and sister in law as it has been close to a year now since all of us have been togehter.... I doubt I would change up the sides to much but that is okay.... We get to do our own Christmas dinner so that should be nice. Deciding between a leg of lamb or a prime rib, grew them both so I know they will be good. The fun part will be firing up the grill if it is a cold Christmas eve.. Nothing liek grilling in the snow.

My wife cooked sweet potatoes the other night like plain old fried potatoes. They were real good and kind of different. I think she rolled them in some flour or something first. I don't know what's for thanksgiving.

Geez Katrina, you make me blush  Now we should be promoting prime rib for Thanksgiving instead of some salmonella infected turkey. If you think that prime rib instead of turkey would not upset the apple cart, picture this, a 15 lb rib roast for 300 million people vs a 15 lb turkey. Of course I know that econ will argue this point as usual, but demand for beef would go up exponentially. DUH
