Some thoughts to pi$$ everyone off!

At times I am amazed at the double talk that takes place on this forum!

I read Canadians crying that COOL is nothing but a trade barrier. The next post, there are several saying "our people have been going out of their way to buy our beef! A product of Canada!"
How the hell can they support your product if you don't want it marked? Or is it OK to mark yours but you don't want to see Product of the USA! This is BS!

MRJ, I've gotten to the point where I don't bother to read your posts anymore. If you agree with something, it is factual, if you don't, it is R-Calf propaganda! Taken out of context! Misquoted! Popularity contest my @ss!

Tex-Econ, you have had some good level headed posts, but you will also post pure garbage if it has one point in it that you agree with.

R-Calf, you guys are praising the Koreans for this statement?
"The chief Korean negotiator of the U.S.-South Korean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) told a gathering of the American Chamber of Commerce in Seoul Tuesday that U.S. lawmakers would be throwing away a "golden opportunity" if they let trade irritants like the ongoing dispute over beef derail the trade deal."

The product you raise and sell is nothing but an irritant? You have peta, vegetarians, etc. screaming that the product you raise is unsafe & you agree with them? Instead of assurance, your posts are on BSE, e-coli, etc! If I were a veggie head, I would be combing this site for posts calling beef unsafe just like flounder does! Look what the ranchers are saying about their own product! Yep, your cattle are full of disease but you shoot and bury them. The USDA whom is your sworn enemy is part of the cover up!???

Everyone on this site has done a good job of tearing each others beef down & have written hundreds of negative posts on it. When do you get together to start promoting it?
I eat beef daily in the USA, a few months ago I ate beef in Canada, I have eaten beef in Australia, Japan, & Vietnam. I have always enjoyed it and it has yet to make me sick. I still believe it is one of the safest foods to eat! So what the hell is wrong with me? You have all been doing your best to inform me that it is dangerous!

It has been pointed out many times how much beef demand has fallen. When you find yourself in a hole, the best thing to do is to quit digging! Stop shooting yourselves in the foot & bitching about the bleeding!

Sorry, fedup, I usually like to post the whole article for others to see the source. Maybe I should cut and paste just the part with the source.

I think everyone should be able to look at an article and be able to pick out the points they see as important.

I think the master of double speak is Greenspan, but if you look hard enough, you will find the pearl of wisdom in it.

Fedup, "R-Calf, you guys are praising the Koreans for this statement?
"The chief Korean negotiator of the U.S.-South Korean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) told a gathering of the American Chamber of Commerce in Seoul Tuesday that U.S. lawmakers would be throwing away a "golden opportunity" if they let trade irritants like the ongoing dispute over beef derail the trade deal."

I didn't see anybody praising that comment, but speaking for this R-CALF member only, I think Korea is totally within their rights to claim there is a health aspect that needs to be addressed.

Sorry Sandhusker, but I took your comment at the end of that article "The Koreans are right" to mean just that.
I would not be afraid to eat any of the beef sent to Korea even if they found their little sliver of banned material. Would you? Why? If I took the millions of cattle raised in this country over the years and found the actual % of BSE cases it would be so insignificant it amazes me that it is being mentioned. The main reason that it is in the spotlight is the animal rights people & veggie heads love it.

You have along with others have presented some very good discussions to think about on this forum. But, now I feel that many here are going overboard & throwing the baby out with the bath water! Look at the number of posts on e-coli in beef on this forum. If pork, fish, chicken, etc is undercooked, mishandled, etc. the problems are the same along with more health problems than beef! The same with unwashed fruits and vegetables! There is no way anyone can guarantee people will handle food properly. Why is beef constantly taking the blame on this site?

Why would some of the ranchers on this site constantly yell that the product they raise is unhealthy & people are taking risks every time they eat beef! The goal here is starting to look a little short sighted to me. Enough damage has been done. It is time to quit tearing down & start building again!

Just stating my thoughts, not very well organized, but after a while a person gets "fedup" with all the negative talk. Thanks RobertM. I will shut up for a while now!

The product ranchers are raising is not tainted.

It is being manipulated by big packers who are committing frauds on consumers.

It will come back to haunt the producers and it needs to stop.

hey there fedup2. one problem i found in this part of your post, and the problem is, it aint true

i am not a 'veggie head' as you claim, and i dont 'comb' THIS site for posts calling beef unsafe. i go to the fda, usda, fsis, recall sites, and then i post some on this site. ONLY recently, have some of the producers here on this site, finally seen the light of day, and started speaking about these violations, i think this was the part where you said ;

>>>It has been pointed out many times how much beef demand has fallen. When you find yourself in a hole, the best thing to do is to quit digging! Stop shooting yourselves in the foot & bitching about the bleeding!<<<

and once again we find the sad truth of it all, from your post, it's best just to not speak of it all, use the triple SSS policy, and do business as usual.

I thought it was a breath of fresh air to find some of the producers here willing to speak about all these violations, from BSE/TSE, to E-coli, to SALMONELLA.

YOU seem to want to promote these things, or at least just ignore them.

lot of folks eat beef daily and don't get sick. however, others are not so lucky, they fall sick, and some even die, and they don't even eat beef daily.

JANET JENNER & SUGGS, LLC comment [Oct. 10, Press Release] on the October 11, 2007 announcement by ConAgra Foods that it is replacing its advisory notice of October 9, 2007 with a RECALL notice of all varieties of Banquet brand frozen pot pies and all varieties of store brand frozen pot pies sold under the names of Albertson's, Hill Country Fare, Food Lion, Great Value, Kirkwood, Kroger, Meijer and Western Family. Originally, ConAgra did not recall its pot pie products despite reports of 139 injuries in 30 states. Now, the Salmonella outbreak related to the ConAgra food debacle is up to 165 injuries in 31 states.

http://www.salmonella-recall.com/

Products subject to the earlier beef patty recall were produced on Aug. 9, 10, 15, 16 and 17, 2007, and were distributed nationwide. Each package bears the establishment number "Est. 924A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributes about 73,000 illnesses and 60 deaths every year to E. coli. Children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are generally most affected. Food safety experts recommend cooking any ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F., or until the meat is no longer pink and the juices run clear. Also, avoid contaminating other foods with any E. coli bacteria by washing hands, utensils and cutting boards before they come in contact with others foods, as well as by putting cooked meat onto a clean platter rather than the one used for the uncooked meat.

After an outbreak of E. coli infections from Topps Meat, which sickened 40 people in eight states, was found to be linked to Rancher's Beef Ltd. of Balzac, Alberta, United States regulators are tightening restrictions on meat and poultry products from Canada. Unfortunately, these efforts will likely not be enough to stop the ill effects of much of the recent food-borne illness. Other recent recalls include General Mills Jeno's and Totino's frozen meat pizzas for being linked to an E. coli outbreak spanning ten states, as well as ConAgra pot pies responsible for 270 cases of Salmonella poisoning nationwide.

Tyson has issued 2 unrelated ground beef recalls (hamburger recalls) in 2007. The first one was on March 2 and involved 16,743 pounds of ground beef. The second was on June 8 and involved 40,440 pounds of ground beef shipped to Wal-Mart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Below are the USDA-FSIS news releases regarding the Tyson ground beef recalls due to possible contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Pritzker | Ruohonen & Associates, P.A., a leading food poisoning litigation law firm, is republishing it here as a public service. The firm has recovered millions of dollars for food poisoning victims, including a recent settlement for $6,425,000.

right! talking about it, then trying to fix it, what are they thinking.

better to just shut up, and pay the claims. and believe me, they have just started. ...

stupid is, as stupid does. Forest Gump. ...TSS

Tex has a good point; The product is good when it enters the packer's chutes. The problem is the robber barrons cutting corners via their "effeciencies" to squeeze every red cent out of the carcass that they can. As usually happens, when you cheat, you get caught and in this case "getting caught" is tainted product reaching consumers. Everybody in the chain gets a black eye, but the only ones who profit from the "efficiencies" (cheating) are the packers.

The packer lackey's then argue "Why would they risk beef consumption knowing bad product will chase people away from beef?" The answer is they sell the substitutes, too. They can't really lose. People get scared of Tyson's beef, fine, they buy Tyson's chicken. Chicken has a higher margin thanks to verticle integration, so Tyson is actually better off with people buying chicken instead of beef. Same goes for Smithfield and pork.

Sandhusker. It is not my intent to stick up for the packers here, but what other corporation isn't looking for faster-more-cheaper! When you try to put some money away for your kids college expenses, do you look to invest in a company that treats its employees better, or slows things down so everyone is happy, or do you look at their bottom line? What is more important in your investments? That dividend? Who gets those investments? The company that does more-faster & cheaper! The packers are no different than any other company in this world. They answer to their investors! The days of morals, etc are long gone in this business world. That doesn't make it ok. That's just the way it is!

I have a hard time believing that a company would deliberately kill off beef demand to sell more chicken or pork. I am not a packer lackey & I know they could improve things a hell of a lot. I am just trying to use a little common sense here.

Flounder. You have been running around the internet screaming "The sky is falling" for a long time. I am sorry for your loss. Most all of us have lost loved ones but not all of us become obsessed with it.
I can google tss singletary and get nine full pages to sites where you have been screaming "Mad Cow"! Including veggie heads. You have been on pet sites telling people their pets are dying from mad cow, you have been on hunting sites, most every site where people will put up with you trying to tie every disease, sickness, & death to mad cow disease! I saw where one reader described you as a "raving lunatic".
I also saw the response from the chairman - woman of that Korean political party where her response to you included:

{"Through the internet, many people here in Korea have learnt about the story of your family and it has created a great deal of concern. Your experience had particular relevance for the citizens here, for the Korean government, in connection to the free trade agreement it is negotiating with the United States, is about to restart the sale of the unsafe American beef to the general public.}"

Who the hell says its unsafe beef? You? And people wonder why beef demand is dropping!

I don't think they are deliberately killing off beef demand so they can sell more chicken or pork. However, I think it is obvious that they aren't taking a great deal of care not to. They've really got nothing to lose. If they cut corners on beef and get away with it, that's more money for them. If they get caught like they have been, there is really no down side because the USDA refuses to hold thelm accountable and consumers will just buy their other products.

Because there is really no down side, I can't compare what they are doing with other companies trying to maximize profits. Everybody else runs the risk of losing business -and money - if their products are shoddy or dangerous. These guys don't.

not so, i only try to tie TSE related disease to mad cow.
so i post to more than one site, and some include veggie sites, so what. so i post the truth to more than one site. so i post to hunting sites, and to pet sites. don't we have CWD in deer and elk running rampant. don't we have pet food killing our dogs and cats. and how many of those cats and dogs in the USA ever get tested for a TSE. don't you imagine since our federal government is willing to cover-up mad cow disease in Texas, they can do it in cats, and dogs, by simply not looking. it works for cattle. let me remind you of a few things about this following the part you said about the Koreans. you just posted a short part of that, let me post the rest ;

Dear Terry S. Singeltary Sr.
My name in Seoungwon Lee and I work for National Assemblywoman (MP) Sang-Jeong Sim, in South Korea. Below is a message from Mr. Kwon. Please get back to us regarding the letter.
Thank you.
Seoungwon Lee
Legislative Assistant
National Assembly
Republic of Korea
Dear Terry S. Singeltary Sr.
Greetings from Korea.
I have learned about what you and your family have been through a internet. Being the father of a small family, I can only imagine the sense of loss that you and your family still must feel regarding your mother.

Through the internet, many people here in Korea have learnt about the story of your family and it has created a great deal of concern. Your experience had particular relevance for the citizens here, for the Korean government, in connection to the free trade agreement it is negotiating with the United States, is about to restart the sale of the unsafe American beef to the general public.

The Korean government has already imported the first load American beef and is currently going through the inspection period. There has been a great deal of controversy regarding the safety of these products, and a precipitous increase in public interest regarding the causes and symptoms of vCJD.

It is in this context that we are preparing a session together with National Assembly members and relevant NGOs to hear from those who have had direct experience with the human variant of BSE. We are very interested in hearing about the symptoms that your mother showed, your views on the response from the US government to the many deaths that resulted from this disease, the reaction from the general public, and any other area that you would wish to speak about. There would also be experts and academics in the area to speak at the session as well. We believe that it would greatly contribute to raising awareness about the issue, as well as help politicians and civic activists to consider the repercussions of the beef import issue.

We would like to request your help in this regard. We are planning for the session to be held in Seoul on the 23rd of this November. We would very much like to have you present in order to help prevent such tragic incidents from happening in Korea. We would, of course, pay for the trip and accommodations for the duration of your stay. If you were to participate, we could also meet with members from the agricultural committee of the National Assembly and from other related organizations to urge more interest to the issue.

Please do not hesitate to offer suggestions or ask us any questions that you might have. We look forward to a positive response and to meeting you in Seoul.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sim Sang-Jeong
Head of the Democratic Labor Party Parliamentary Committee on the Korea-US FTA
Member of the National Assembly

SO they wanted to know the truth. i cannot help that. they cannot seem to get the truth from this administration. ...

NOW, about those pets you dont seem to think that can get mad cow disease i.e. TSE, and then show us where we are testing to see if any of the reported canine or feline dementia related deaths are a TSE here in the USA ? we know how they test for cattle

GAH WELLS (very important statement here...TSS)

HOUND STUDY

AS implied in the Inset 25 we must not _ASSUME_ that
transmission of BSE to other species will invariably
present pathology typical of a scrapie-like disease.

76 pages on hound study;

http://www.bseinquiry.gov.uk/files/sc/seac16/tab04.pdf

The spongiform changes were not pathognomonic (ie.
conclusive proof) for prion disease, as they were atypical,
being largely present in white matter rather than grey matter in
the brain and spinal cord. However, Tony Scott, then head of
electron microscopy work on TSEs, had no doubt that these
SAFs were genuine and that these hounds therefore must have
had a scrapie-like disease. I reviewed all the sections
myself (original notes appended) and although the pathology
was not typical, I could not exclude the possibility that this was
a scrapie-like disorder, as white matter vacuolation is seen
in TSEs and Wallerian degeneration was also present in the
white matter of the hounds, another feature of scrapie.

38.I reviewed the literature on hound neuropathology, and
discovered that micrographs and descriptive neuropathology from
papers on 'hound ataxia' mirrored those in material from
Robert Higgins' hound survey. Dr Tony Palmer (Cambridge) had
done much of this work, and I obtained original sections
from hound ataxia cases from him. This enabled me provisionally to
conclude that Robert Higgins had in all probability detected
hound ataxia, but also that hound ataxia itself was possibly a
TSE. Gerald Wells confirmed in 'blind' examination of single
restricted microscopic fields that there was no distinction
between the white matter vacuolation present in BSE and
scrapie cases, and that occurring in hound ataxia and the hound
survey cases.

39.Hound ataxia had reportedly been occurring since the 1930's,
and a known risk factor for its development was the feeding
to hounds of downer cows, and particularly bovine offal.
Circumstantial evidence suggests that bovine offal may also be
causal in FSE, and TME in mink. Despite the inconclusive
nature of the neuropathology, it was clearly evident that this
putative canine spongiform encephalopathy merited further
investigation.

40.The inconclusive results in hounds were never confirmed,
nor was the link with hound ataxia pursued. I telephoned Robert
Higgins six years after he first sent the slides to CVL.
I was informed that despite his submitting a yearly report to the
CVO including the suggestion that the hound work be continued,
no further work had been done since 1991. This was
surprising, to say the very least.

41.The hound work could have provided valuable evidence
that a scrapie-like agent may have been present in cattle offal long
before the BSE epidemic was recognised. The MAFF hound
survey remains unpublished.

Histopathological support to various other published
MAFF experiments

42.These included neuropathological examination of material
from experiments studying the attempted transmission of BSE to
chickens and pigs (CVL 1991) and to mice (RVC 1994).

http://www.bseinquiry.gov.uk/witness/htm/stat067.htm

It was thought likely that at least some, and probably all, of the cases
in zoo animals were caused by the BSE agent. Strong support for this
hypothesis came from the findings of Bruce and others (1994)
( Bruce, M.E., Chree, A., McConnell, I., Foster, J., Pearson, G. &
Fraser, H. (1994) Transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy and
scrapie to mice: strain variation and species barrier. Philosophical
Transactions of the Royal Society B 343, 405-411: J/PTRSL/343/405
), who demonstrated that the pattern of variation in incubation period
and lesion profile in six strains of mice inoculated with brain
homogenates from an affected kudu and the nyala, was similar to that
seen when this panel of mouse strains was inoculated with brain from
cattle with BSE. The affected zoo bovids were all from herds that were
exposed to feeds that were likely to have contained contaminated
ruminant-derived protein and the zoo felids had been exposed, if only
occasionally in some cases, to tissues from cattle unfit for human
consumption.

Dear Mr Singeltary TSE IN HOUNDS

Thank you for e-mail regarding the hounds survey. I am sorry for the long delay in responding.

As you note, the hound survey remains unpublished. However the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC),
the UK Government's independent Advisory Committee on all aspects related to BSE-like disease, gave the hound study
detailed consideration at their meeting in January 1994. As a summary of this meeting published in the BSE inquiry noted,
the Committee were clearly concerned about the work that had been carried out, concluding that there had clearly been
problems with it, particularly the control on the histology, and that it was more or less inconclusive. However was agreed
that there should be a re-evaluation of the pathological material in the study.

Later, at their meeting in June 95, The Committee re-evaluated the hound study to see if any useful results could be
gained from it. The Chairman concluded that there were varying opinions within the Committee on further work. It did
not suggest any further transmission studies and thought that the lack of clinical data was a major weakness.

Overall, it is clear that SEAC had major concerns about the survey as conducted. As a result it is likely that the
authors felt that it would not stand up to peer review and hence it was never published. As noted above, and in the
detailed minutes of the SEAC meeting in June 95, SEAC considered whether additional work should be performed to
examine dogs for evidence of TSE infection. Although the Committee had mixed views about the merits of conducting
further work, the Chairman noted that when the Southwood Committee made their recommendation to complete an
assessment of possible spongiform disease in dogs, no TSEs had been identified in other species and hence dogs
were perceived as a high risk population and worthy of study. However subsequent to the original recommendation,
made in 1990, a number of other species had been identified with TSE ( e.g. cats) so a study in hounds was less
critical.

For more details see-
http://www.bseinquiry.gov.uk/files/yb/1995/06/21005001.pdf

As this study remains unpublished, my understanding is that the ownership of the data essentially remains with the original researchers.
Thus unfortunately, I am unable to help with your request to supply information on the hound survey directly. My only suggestion is
that you contact one of the researchers originally involved in the project, such as Gerald Wells. He can be contacted at the following address.

Dr Gerald Wells, Veterinary Laboratories Agency, New Haw, Addlestone, Surrey, KT 15 3NB, UK

You may also wish to be aware that since November 1994 all suspected cases of spongiform encephalopathy in animals and poultry were made notifiable.
Hence since that date there has been a requirement for vets to report any suspect SE in dogs for further investigation. To date there has never
been positive identification of a TSE in a dog.

I hope this is helpful

Yours sincerely 4

Deaths of CJD man and cat linked

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/184558.stm

In October 1998 the simultaneous occurrence of spongiform encephalopathy
in a man and his pet cat was reported. The report from Italy noted that
the cat did not display the same clinical features as FSE cases
previously seen. Indeed, the presence of a new type of FSE was
suggested. The man was diagnosed as having sporadic CJD, and neither
case (man nor cat) appeared to be affected by a BSE-related condition.

Simultaneous occurrence of spongiform encephalopathy in a manand his cat in Italy

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) encompass inherited, acquired, and sporadic mammalian neurological disorders, and arecharacterised by the conversion of the cellular prion protein (PrP) in aninsoluble and protease-resistant isoform (PrPres). In human TSE, four typesof PrPres have been identified according to size and glycoform ratios, whichmay represent different prion strains. Type-1 and type-2 PrPres areassociated with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), type 3 withiatrogenic CJD, and type 4 with variant CJD.1,2 There is evidence thatvariant CJD is caused by the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)-prionstrain.2-4 The BSE strain has been identified in three cats with felinespongiform encephalopathy (FSE), a prion disease which appeared in 1990 inthe UK.5 We report the simultaneous occurrence of sporadic CJD in a man anda new variety of FSE in his cat. A 60-year-old man, with no unusual dietary habits, was admitted in November,1993, because of dysarthria, cerebellar ataxic gait, visual agnosia, andmyoclonus. An electroencephalogram (EEG) showed diffuse theta-deltaactivity. A brain magnetic resonance imaging scan was unremarkable. 10 dayslater, he was speechless and able to follow only simple commands. RepeatEEGs showed periodic triphasic complexes. 2 weeks after admission, he wasmute, akinetic, and unable to swallow. He died in early January, 1994. His 7-year-old, neutered, female shorthaired cat presented in November,1993, with episodes of frenzy, twitching of its body, and hyperaesthesia. The cat was usually fed on canned food and slept on its owner's bed. Nobites from the cat were recalled. In the next few days, the cat becameataxic, with hindquarter locomotor dysfunction; the ataxia got worse andthere was diffuse myoclonus. The cat was killed in mid-January, 1994. No pathogenic mutations in the patient's PrP gene were found. The patientand the cat were methionine homozygous at codon 129. Histology of thepatient's brain showed neocortical and cerebellar neuronal loss, astrocytosis, and spongiosis (figure A). PrP immunoreactivity showed apunctate pattern and paralleled spongiform changes (figure B). The cat'sbrain showed mild and focal spongiosis in deeper cortical layers of all fourlobes (figure C), vacuolated cortical neurons (figure D), and mildastrogliosis. The cerebellar cortex and the dentate nucleus were gliosed.Immunoreactive PrP showed a punctate pattern in neocortex, allocortex, andcaudate nucleus (figure E). Western blot analysis of control and affectedhuman and cat brain homogenates showed 3 PrP bands of 27-35 kDa. Afterdigestion with proteinase K and deglycosylation, only samples from theaffected patient and cat showed type-1 PrPres, with PrP glycoform ratioscomparable to those observed in sporadic CJD1 (details available fromauthor). [Image] Microscopic sections of patient and cat brains A: Occipital cortex of the patient showing moderate spongiformdegeneration and neuronal loss (haematoxylin and eosin) and B: punctateperineuronal pattern of PrP immunoreactivity; peroxidaseimmunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibody 3F4. C: cat parietal cortexshowing mild spongiform degeneration (haematoxylin and eosin).D:vacuolated neurons (arrow, haematoxylin and eosin), E: peroxidaseimmunohistochemistry with antibody 3F4 shows punctate perineuronaldeposition of PrP in temporal cortex. This study shows a spatio-temporal association between human and felineprion diseases. The clinical features of the cat were different frompreviously reported cases of FSE which were characterised by gradual onsetof behavioural changes preceding locomotor dysfunction and ataxia.5Neuropathological changes were also at variance with the diffuse spongiosisand vacuolation of brainstem neurons, seen in FSE.5 The synaptic pattern ofPrP deposition, similar in the cat and in the patient, was atypical for aBSE-related condition. Evidence of a new type of FSE was further provided bythe detection of a type-1 PrPres, other than the BSE-associated type 4.2Taken together, our data suggest that the same agent strain of sporadic CJDwas involved in the patient and in his cat. It is unknown whether these TSE occurred as the result of horizontaltransmission in either direction, infection from an unknown common source,or the chance occurrence of two sporadic forms.

also;

Reports on the clinical symptoms presented by these cats give a
relatively homogeneous picture: Affected cats show a lack of
coordination with an ataxia mainly of the hind limbs, they often fall
and miss their target when jumping. Fear and increased aggressiveness
against the owner and also other animals is often seen. They do not
longer tolerate to be touched (stroked) and start hiding. These
behavioural chances might be the result of a hypersensibility to touch
and noise, but also to increased fear. Excessive salivation is another
more frequently seen symptom. Cats with FSE in general show severe
behavioural disturbances, restlessness and depression, and a lack of
coat cleaning. Symptoms in large cats in general are comparable to those
in domestic cats. A
report on FSE (in german) has been presented in 2001 in the Swiss FVO
Magazin. A paper on the first FSE case in a domestic cat in Switzerland
is currently in press in the Journal Schweizer Archiv für Tierheilkunde
(SAT).

Yep, you sure got me with your indisputable evidence! How could a man argue against proof like this!
----------------------------
"The spongiform changes were not pathognomonic (ie. conclusive proof)"

I could not exclude the possibility

This enabled me provisionally to conclude

Circumstantial evidence suggests

Despite the inconclusive nature of the neuropathology, it was clearly evident

The inconclusive results in hounds were never confirmed

It was thought likely that at least some, and probably all

the Committee were clearly concerned about the work that had been carried out, concluding that there had clearly been problems with it, particularly the control on the histology, and that it was more or less inconclusive. However……..

lack of clinical data was a major weakness.

authors felt that it would not stand up to peer review and hence it was never public

To date there has never been positive identification of a TSE in a dog.

Florida Firm Recalls Ground Beef Products Due to Possible E. coli O157:H7 Contamination

Recall Release CLASS I RECALL
FSIS-RC-047-2007 HEALTH RISK: HIGH

Congressional and Public Affairs
(202) 720-9113
Laura Reiser

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2007 - Blue Ribbon Meats, a Hialeah, Fla., establishment is voluntarily recalling approximately 8,200 pounds of frozen ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.
The products subject to recall include: [View Carton Labels, PDF Only]
10-pound boxes of "WESPAK B.R.'S BRAND SEASONED BEEF PATTIES FOR SALISBURY, 80/20."
10-pound boxes and 20-pound cases of "JNS FOODS, LLC, B.R.'S BRAND SEASONED BEEF PATTIES FOR SALISBURY, 80/20."
10-pound boxes and 20-pound cases of "JNS FOODS, LLC, BEEF PATTIE MIX, 80/20."
10-pound boxes and 20-pound cases of "JNS FOODS, LLC, BEEF PATTIES, 80/20."
10-pound boxes and 20-pound cases of "JNS FOODS, LLC, MEATLOAF SEASONED BEEF PATTIES, 80/20."

Preparing Ground Beef For Safe Consumption

USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHOTLINE or visit www.fsis.usda.gov

Although the product(s) being recalled should be returned to the point of purchase, consumers preparing other ground beef products should heed the following advice.

Consumers should only eat ground beef patties that have been cooked to a safe temperature of 160 °F. When a ground beef patty is cooked to 160 °F throughout, it can be safe and juicy, regardless of color.

The only way to be sure a ground beef patty is cooked to a high enough temperature to kill harmful bacteria is to use an accurate food thermometer.

Color is not a reliable indicator that ground beef patties have been cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7.

Eating a pink or red ground beef patty without first verifying that the safe temperature of 160 °F has been reached is a significant risk factor for foodborne illness.

Thermometer use to ensure proper cooking temperature is especially important for those who cook or serve ground beef patties to people most at risk for foodborne illness because E. coli O157:H7 can lead to serious illness or even death. Those most at risk include young children, seniors, and those with compromised immune systems.

Each case or box bears the establishment number "Est. 451A" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Each case or box bears a date code of "2577," "2647" or "2707." Each case or box bears an "ingredients" statement that includes "textured vegetable protein" or "defatted soy grits."

The frozen beef products were produced between Sept. 14 and Sept. 27, 2007, and were sent to a distributor intended for a correctional institution in Florida and to a distributor intended for a subsequent distributor in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The problem was discovered by Creekstone Farm (Est. 27), an Arkansas City, Kan., establishment that supplies the recalling company and inadvertently shipped product that they had on hold. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products.

Media and consumers with questions about the recall should contact company vice president Ira Bregman at (305) 887-7534.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.

excellent point there fedup2. now your thinking......

in fact this is a direct route for deadly pathogens, and possibly TSEs as well. in this day and time, the practice of spreading cow manure all over produce, or the land that grows them, is just another practice used by the industry that should be stopped. ...TSS

taking this discussion further, feces and urine are a mixed bag so to speak when applying them to land and vegetables ;

Separation of feces and urine to prevent urea hydrolysis is not a feasible approach for reducing ammonia emissions from poultry litter.

Prions, infectious agents causing transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), are composed primarily of the pathogenic form (PrPSc) of the host-encoded prion protein. Although very low levels of infectivity have been detected in urine from scrapie-infected rodents, no reports of urinary PrPSc have been substantiated. Studies on the dynamics of urinary PrPSc during infection are needed to ensure the safety of urine-derived biopharmaceuticals and to assess the possible horizontal transmission of prion diseases. Using the protein misfolding cyclic amplification technique, a time-course study of urinary excretion and blood levels of PrPSc was performed in Sc237-infected hamsters and a high rate of PrPSc excretion was found during the terminal stage of the disease. Following oral administration, PrPSc was present in all buffy coat samples examined; it was also present in most of the plasma samples obtained from hamsters in the symptomatic stage. PrPSc was excreted in urine for a few days after oral administration; subsequently, urinary PrPSc was not detected until the terminal disease stage. These results represent the first biochemical detection of PrPSc in urine from TSE-infected animals.

Abstract

The question of whether prion diseases can be transmitted by body fluids has important epidemiological, environmental and economical implications. In this work, we set to investigate whether urine collected from scrapie-infected hamsters can transmit fatal or subclinical infectivity to normal hamsters. After prolonged incubation times ranging from 300 to 700 days, a small number of animals inoculated with scrapie urine succumbed to scrapie disease, and several asymptomatic hamsters presented low levels of PrPSc in their brains. In addition, most of the asymptomatic hamsters inoculated with scrapie urine, as opposed to those inoculated with normal urine, presented extensive gliosis as well as protease-resistant light chain IgG in their urine, a molecule shown by us and others to be a surrogate marker for prion infection. Our results suggest that urine from scrapie-infected hamsters can transmit a widespread subclinical disease that in some cases develops into fatal scrapie.

Discussion

The experiments presented in this work suggest that

inoculation of urine from scrapie-infected hamsters may

induce a widely distributed subclinical prion disease that

in some cases develops into fatal scrapie. If true for additional

prion-infected animals, such as bovine and sheep,

these findings may explain the unexpected outbreaks of

prion disease in the field even after the implementation

of eradication programs which included slathering of infected

flocks [25, 26] . It also explains the sporadic appearance

of chronic wasting disease in North America and

the transmission of the disease over long distances [27,

28] .

Renal inflammation, such as the one present in mice

suffering from lymphocytic nephritis, resulted in excretion

of infectious prions into urine [15] . Such an inflammation

process may also be present in apparently healthy

animals, especially at older age, therefore increasing the

possibility of disease transmission by infectious urine. In

addition, it is possible that experiments performed in the

past to look for infectivity in body fluids such as blood

and urine may have produced subclinical prion disease,

which was overlooked in view of the negative appearance

of clinically scrapie-sick animals.

The presence of protease-resistant LC in scrapie urine

is very intriguing. LC Ig is known to be a beta sheet protein,

although it was never shown to be protease-resistant

even in diseases where it is present in large concentrations

such as multiple myeloma [17, 29] . If this is so, then the

presence of protease-resistant LC in urine may constitute

a surrogate marker for the presence of secreted prion

seeds.

The accumulating data on subclinical prion infection

suggests it is possible that apparently healthy individuals

may harbor prions without showing overt clinical disease.

These individuals would represent a reservoir of infectivity

for the potential infection of others. The results

shown in this work suggest that scrapie urine may represent

such a reservoir. While the exposure of animals to

scrapie urine will reflect mostly as subclinical disease,

environmental- or human-induced changes may change

the outcome to more virulent prion diseases.

Oral Transmissibility of Prion Disease Is Enhanced by Binding to Soil Particles
Christopher J. Johnson1,2, Joel A. Pedersen3, Rick J. Chappell4, Debbie McKenzie2, Judd M. Aiken1,2*

Soil may serve as an environmental reservoir for prion infectivity and contribute to the horizontal transmission of prion diseases (transmissible spongiform encephalopathies [TSEs]) of sheep, deer, and elk. TSE infectivity can persist in soil for years, and we previously demonstrated that the disease-associated form of the prion protein binds to soil particles and prions adsorbed to the common soil mineral montmorillonite (Mte) retain infectivity following intracerebral inoculation. …

In conclusion, our results provide compelling support for the hypothesis that soil serves as a biologically relevant reservoir of TSE infectivity. Our data are intriguing in light of reports that naïve animals can contract TSEs following exposure to presumably low doses of agent in the environment [5,79]. We find that Mte enhances the likelihood of TSE manifestation in cases that would otherwise remain subclinical (Figure 3B and 3C), and that prions bound to soil are orally infectious (Figure 5). Our results demonstrate that adsorption of TSE agent to inorganic microparticles and certain soils alter transmission efficiency via the oral route of exposure.

A critical concern in the transmission of prion diseases, including chronic wasting disease (CWD) of cervids, is the potential presence of prions in body fluids. To address this issue directly, we exposed cohorts of CWD-naïve deer to saliva, blood, or urine and feces from CWD-positive deer. We found infectious prions capable of transmitting CWD in saliva (by the oral route) and in blood (by transfusion). The results help to explain the facile transmission of CWD among cervids and prompt caution concerning contact with body fluids in prion infections.

Survival of PrPSc during Simulated Wastewater Treatment Processes

Concern has been expressed that prions could enter wastewater treatment systems
through sewer and/or septic systems (e.g., necropsy laboratories, rural meat
processors, private game dressing) or through leachate from landfills that have
received TSE-contaminated material. Prions are highly resistant to degradation and
many disinfection procedures raising concern that they could survive conventional
wastewater treatment. Here, we report the results of experiments examining the
partitioning and survival of PrPSc during simulated wastewater treatment processes
including activated and mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion. We establish that PrPSc
can be efficiently extracted from activated and anaerobic digester sludges with 1%
sodium dodecyl sulfate, 10% sodium undecyl sulfate, and 1% sodium N-lauryl
sarcosinate. Activated sludge digestion does not result in significant degradation of
PrPSc. The protein partitions strongly to the activated sludge solids and is
expected to enter biosolids treatment processes. A large fraction of PrPSc survived
simulated mesophilic anaerobic sludge digestion. Our results suggest that if prions
were to enter municipal waste water treatment systems, most of the agent would partition
to activated sludge solids, survive mesophilic anaerobic digestion, and be
present in treated biosolids. Land application of biosolids containing prions could
represent a route for their unintentional introduction into the environment. Our results
argue for excluding inputs of prions to municipal wastewater treatment facilities that
would result in unacceptable risk of prion disease transmission via contaminated
biosolids.

what we have here, is a long term gamble, with a disease of long incubation, of which many industries and our governments decided to roll the dice on. lack of surveillance, lack of testing, lack of leadership, lack of documented cases, and lack of documented body bags, lack of integrity, will all play a toll, in this long term experiment with human and animal health, and TSEs. the decission was final with the BSE MRR policy, that the deaths from TSEs were expendable, due to the long incubation, and the fact that science has been mooving along at a snails pace in regards to TSEs, due to many factors, some of which were and are political. only time will tell, and i hope that i will be proven wrong, we all wake up one morning and this all was one big bad dream terry just made up. ...or not!

Wrong answer flounder! Try again! Do you have any idea how many pounds of manure a cow produces in a year? What would you do with it? Store it like nuclear waste? Maybe round up all the cattle & put them in a park somewhere so they can't get you!

If I google using manure as fertilizer, I come up with over 1,700,000 hits. Most all telling of the great benefits of using manure for fertilizer. What it comes down to once again is the mishandling of food. Consumer ignorance. Instead of spending your time on a ranchers site telling people how their cattle are responsible for every evil in this world (besides what Bush gets blamed for) why aren't you trying to educate users of these products. How about warning or safety stickers on all vegetables stating they must be washed or peeled before use! Naw! That would probably make to much sense. Its easier to try and get everyone to quit eating beef so cattle would eventually become extinct. Then you would finally get rid of your terrible nightmares!

Take a viagra & dissolve it in a glass of water. Sit down and pour yourself a 'stiff one'. Then go out and have a little fun! Get a life!
