Alot of you guys in the blizzards path haven't checked in...hope you all survived it! Like Leanin' H said we've all been worried about you.

Cal, sorry to hear about your calves.
 
Thanks. I'm afraid as the snow melts there's going to be numerous ranchers find some dead ones under the drifts.....hope not. I don't know of any human fatalities associated with that storm system, so thankful for that.
 
Haven't heard much fro the Colorado folks. It sure looks bad as you get closer to the rocks, at least on the news. Boy can the spring be a nasty time.
 
A lot of people are calving around here and are just trying to wrap up the week from HE77 after last Monday and Tuesday's storm. Now here's a quote from the NWS website:

I don't think there are many terribly major losses from this last one, but things are stressed and really need a little time to recuperate. If round two hits us within a weeks time things could really get challenging.

Richard--You don't want to look at the long range forecast-- as the weather boys are saying after this one gets thru- the pattern appears like another may be building to follow right on the same path to get here about the end of next week..... :shock: :(

There are a few things I learned about a blizzard. OK I will admit it wasnt as big as some but roads are still shut down and even tractors are getting stuck. Hoping they can get the highway open today if not will be going anyway.
New born jersey calves will freeze to death in 10 min when the wind is blowing 50 mph. Thank God only one died and it was a bull calf. Cows will wait till the storm is in full swing then start poping them out. We had 14 calves from 7 pm till 4 am.
If you are driving a tractor in whiteout conditions find the dimmer switch or you will get blinded by the reflection. Cell phone batteries will die due to cold no matter how well charged they are. Blowing snow will make drifts with something as small as a little tumbleweed. After working 17 hours straight you get very punch drunk, and those who have slept all night dont find things as funny as you.
I learned these from others mistakes LOL Stick to the tractor tracts as much as possible or you will get a kabuto stuck then it takes 2 hours for it to be burried. Feed wagon will tip over while full when driven into a field. Make sure you have a Bigger tractor to get both tractor and feed wagon unstuck. Spinning the wheels of a tracor will NOT get it unstuck from and icy spot, and if you do get it stuck try not to be where the cat can not get to you because of the barn and windbreak. Big tractors will get stuck in a circle. Cows (Angus) will wait untill you have all tractors stuck but the smallest one to get out onto the highway. Snowplows do NOT stop for cows on the road but atleast they will call and let you know they are out and they hit one....sorry. Snowplows driver cant see any better than anyone else in whiteout condition.
The county/state close roads for a reason....ok that one I learned on my own LOL If you cant see road signs and your sure your in the middle of the road keep a GOOD EYE out for snowplows ooppssss Sitting close to the stearingwheel does help see better when you are short. A 10 mile drive really does take an hour. A four foot snowdrift in front of your door will not move just by you yelling at it......snow shovel was inside. yeap I have a snow shovel bought it last year, havent used it but once and that was yesterday afternoon LOL
Yes I survived and I am sure a lot of yall have gone through worse. And the biggest thing I learned is, no matter how bad things were here to us someone who hasnt seen the conditions will tell you it wasnt bad.

Well hopefully since we're staring at the first of April next week, we'll start getting more springlike days. But for now, March looks to be really going out like a lion. 10-15" of additional snow and 50 mph wind gusts from Sunday Night through Monday Night. Since everything is drifted full from last week, maybe this snow will just blow on by until it finds some place to lay down :wink:

:shock: UGH!!! We're supposed to get more too, but not quite that severe. May be a different story coming later next week :shock:. If I could, I'd send up the calving barn, some hay, and about 500 trees for shelter. At least Ranchers.net can give you all some moral support! Keep us posted.

Seriously, we all appreciate the concern. Round one didn't knock us out and we'll come back swinging for round two. I just hope this fight doesn't have too many rounds.
 
Well this morning is a dreery nasty day- mainly because of the 25-35 mph ENE wind (that they are predicting may get as high as 50 later in the day)....Temp is 36 degrees-but that wind bites... A few snowflakes were coming down when I was feeding- but elseways no real snow yet...50 miles south of us its white already...
 
Pretty much the same here, OT. No snow yet. But it's coming.
Predict 10-15 inches here. We didn't get much snow the last time
and we don't want any this time.

Keeping our fingers crossed.

That ENE wind is bad, so many have their shelters built or in place for the prevailing winds--NW.

OH, OH. Here comes the snow. And we have a tight bagged cow we need to find her calf. So many stupid things happen in this kind of weather!!
 
We actually hit 40 degrees today and had some sun so it made that east wind a little more tolerable. The increase in temp is a really good thing because we got glazed up with freezing rain this morning and that could have spelled disaster for the power lines when the wind really picks up. I came in to get an updated forecast. I thought maybe this system made a U-turn and headed back west....no such luck :( Our blizzard watch has been upgraded to a warning now. On the bright side, we're only supposed to have 40-50 mph winds as opposed to 70-80 mph last week. Those hurricane force winds last week were almost too much. I think Buffalo, SD had a 90 mph gust.
 
It looks like we dodged a bullet up here north of the Missouri...No snow- only wind- which has now dropped down to about 15mph--and the weather boys have dropped our storm advisory as it appears on the radar the storm is dropping further south....

I was looking at the Road report site-- and it looks like there are several highways south and west of us that are emergency travel only- and even a couple in the Great Falls area that are closed...
 
Snow is getting with it here this morning. Not sure how much accumulation is predicted. Wind is not so bad but just the way the snow is coming down the visibility isn't very good. Everything is white. Schools all over the area are closed. I-90 closed from WY to Wall, SD.

I fed plenty of hay yesterday so will just let the cows hunker down today. I'm fortunate to not be calving yet.

Be careful out there!
 
I suppose I shouldn't even tell you folks this--but this morning the sun is shining- the temp is 32 degrees on its way to near 40-- about a 5 mph little breeze- calves are running all over playing-- and its just beautiful....Just hard to imagine someone could be having a snowstorm- or the storm could have gone so near - but missed us... :-)

I agree with John SD- for those folks that are in this- Be careful....
 
We didn't get the snow that was predicted (yet, anyway) and the wind has gone down some. Far cry from what your weather is OT, but
it is bearable so far.

Had a 16 year old cow (the oldest cow we have) who was trying to
have a backwards calf yesterday. Mr. FH tried to get her in, and she
didn't cooperate. He had many others to tend to, so he said she was on her own for now. Later he came in and said she had the calf out to
it's hips and that she would probably have it on her own, but that it
would most likely be dead.

Guess what? She had it by herself and it was alive!!!
This is a really good cow that doesn't show her age, and that's why
she is still here. Never, ever has this cow had a problem. I was so
proud of her and I think he was, too. I'll get a picture of her soon as I can and post it here.
