I have been thinking that it would be a neat idea to take some of the best pictures from ranchers.net and make a calendar for the coming year. It could be done in the spirit of the Western Horseman calendars, and have a photo that fits each month or season. Western Horseman also has a smaller second picture inset lower in the page. I have been going to do this myself for a year on our ranch, but have not gotten it done yet. We did have a family friend, who is a printer by trade, take photos at our branding one year, and make calendars for everyone there. And we all know there are several good poets such as sw, Jinglebob, and Saddletramp who would have some nice western poems to add to the calendar.

Just a thought. This would give plenty of time for everyone to participate in this before the latter part of the year.

Keeping this up to the top...

Tap, would these be printed up and sold? I'm pretty sure those who contribute picture and/or poem would need to get their work copyrighted. If sold, would we need to set up an LLC to distribute the funds to those who contribute?

OR

Am I being totally female and making 'way too big of a deal about this? :P (I could be, I need more information from you)

I think it's a great idea....just need more information on your ideas, Tap and more input from others who would be contributing...

Let's hash this out on the boards.

Soooooooooooooooooo, what do you guys think?

Hanta Yo, I had the idea that if Macon was interested in putting a calendar out with his "stamp" on it, that somehow we could get it together. I had no ideas set in stone, but it's possible that the pictures could be chosen for each month in the same fashion as the photo contest. I was thinking that Macon (or someone else possibly) would have to sell the calendars, but the photographer of each picture might be able to make something off their picture. It may require more photos with people in them, but it would not have to be that way either. It would not have to have western scenery alltogether either, but of course I am biased some there. :-) I was really looking for input and ideas when I posted, but we are not getting much reaction yet.

Really if we were going to do this in a photo contest fashion, we should start it before the end of the year. Like January's pictures should be judged reasonably soon, so there are not hundreds to choose from at one time. With dial up internet this makes it harder for some of us, as I would like to enter several pictures, and view a lot of others, but it would take all day to load and sift through them.

Maybe there should be a panel of judges that Macon could choose (they wouldn't even necessarily have to be ranchers.net readers), and we could send our pictures to him.

Help! We need ideas.

To keep this fair (and interesting), I would also like to see this possible project have only members of ranchers.net be eligible to enter photos.

It is a great idea. My guess is that there is enough pictures in the photo gallery to fill up several years worth calenders. I'm not a photographer so I wouldn't be posting any but I can sure support it by buying some.

I to think it is a terrific idea. I was wondering the other day if someone one here has ever had their photo's printed in a magazine or the like as there are some mighty impressive pictures that get posted here. I for one couldn't pass up a calender of Ranch photo's.... :D

Northern Rancher, are you indicating R-Calf is a worthy cause? LOL Couldn't resist the smart comeback!

Bringin' this back up to the top...

Saddletramp, good to hear from you!!!!!

Anyone have any other ideas?

It isn't very hard to do a copyright. My main concern was for those who donate a picture, a poem, if they don't copyright their picture or poem, and it is sold to the public, their picture or poem can be stolen by anyone to claim it is theirs. Perhaps we can donate pictures/poems, and have it copy written under Ranchers.net. but I don't know the legalities of doing this. Anyone out there an attorney??? help?

When I first got started publishing my poems, one of the worries was that someone else would steal it, as their own. I finally found out that there is so much of this stuff out there and the rewards, monetarily are so small, that there isn't much chance of someone else stealing and making money off from something I do. :)

As far as pictures, just look at all the great pictures on here and we are but a small portion of the world.

So if anyone wants to do this, I wouldn't worry too much about needing a copyright.

If so, just print that on each poem or picture, "copyright retained by----" would pretty much do it.

Basicly, you would just need proof that you were the original writer or photographer.

If anyone wants to do this, I'm in, for what it's worth.

Have any of you noticed all the different calenders that are out there? Not to say that this one wouldn't be a good one, but I wouldn't worry to much about anyone stealing it. :)

And as far as theft, I kind'a try to think that if someone needs something I've got so bad as to steal it, well, they are probably welcome to it. Life's too short to hate. And I sure like to help out my fellow man. If someone takes something of mine, they must need it pretty bad and probably just didn't have time to ask me first.

I'll let the good Lord worry about me. I kind'a think that's part of his job. :D

'Sides, He's always done a good job of seeing that I have all I need, so far. Maybe too much, at times. :)

I work at a newspaper and we do job printing all the time.

IMO, we need to get the specs together, size, quantity etc. and
get a quote as to what it will cost before we go much further.

I think you are going to be shocked at what it will cost
to do a calendar in FULL COLOR.

Let's decide size and quantity, type of paper needed
and I'll get a ball park figure. OK?

A "Ranchers.Net" calendar sounds like a good idea. Maybe a "low cost" way to do it would be to just feature one picture and one poem per month, along with calendar days and dates. It could just be on a feature page on Ranchers.Net, that would be "user-friendly" and easily printed on home computers if people wanted a "hard copy." This could be formatted a year in advance, so that the calendar pages could be printed off and put together as a calendar ahead of time, by those wishing to do it.

Just a thought for what it is worth.

Great idea,has my vote :)

How about a calendar that comes with a pocket containing a DVD of performances by Saddletramp, Jinglebob and any others who can contribute talents. Maybe even a roping exhibition we never saw in Deadwood??
