Any critique of this bull?

Well he's not the best on his feet and legs and I'll just leave it at that-kind of like buying a house if the foundation is weak it doesn't really matter what the roof is like. He looks like quite an old bull in that pic.

The bull in the picture is indeed Advance Domino 20th!

In 1933 two half-brother Herefords, Advance Domino 20th and Advance Domino 54th were obtained by the research station in Miles City, Montana and put with fifty-eight registered Hereford cows purchased from George Miles. The cows were divided into two groups and thereafter sons of one bull were bred to daughters of the other. The line was closed, no more genes were added. That is the story of Line One the first, largest and most well known of all the Miles City lines.

I have read that Advance Domino 20th left considerably more sons and daughters that were used in the herd than Advance Domino 54th (anybody else heard the same or different?). This bull whom some have just called butt ugly is more than likely in the pedigree of almost every Hereford out there. The reach of the line ones is almost impossible to overstate. They are the most successful linebred performance tested line of cattle in any breed.

I didn't say you had to like them, but name another line that has had as much of an impact on the cattle business. I didn't say they were the best, just successful (which in a biological sense means most offspring).

I don't think successful has anything to do with popularity or recognizability. There's certainly some good L1 cattle out there and there are some sorry ones, same as any herd of cattle.

From my pedigrees it looks like Advance Domino 20 shows up about 2-1 over Advance Domino 54. The curious thing is 20 was a fall born calf in 1931 and 54 was a July calf in 1932.

DT,

Thanks for the information. I can't remember where I read the information on 20 & 54, but what you see seems to confirm that my memory is not totally gone, yet!

Thats interesting. A few weeks ago...messin around in an old house on one of the places I've been mowin. I found a book of Hereford registration papers. Now..since my scanner won't compute with my computer, I'll hafta take a few photo's of them and post them.

I can't find out a lot of info on them but I did find the Dandy Larry D32 bull. He traces back to Prince Domino(the sire of Prince Domino 20 and 54) twice. I would guess that all those Miss Mixer cattle trace to him also as I found a PR Domino Mixer that was Prince Domino bred to a line of cattle named Mischief.
