Hadda cow that calved yesterday mornin, (durin a storm no less) and she had one bad quarter, swoll up. She's an old cow, prolly let her raise this calf then she'll be off down the road for a short trip. Had to drain it with the needle.

Got Mud???

Ah Lilly, but 'old ugly' has so much character about her!!!

And I hope you have better luck with those milking needles than we ever did. Seems like we just created more problems using them because opening up the teat allows bacteria to enter the bag and the cow can get mastitis. If we should have that problem now, we just let the cow dry up in that quarter on her own. We have one cow now that has only three quarters and she raises a huge calf every year.

Like I say, I hope that milking needle works for you. We threw all ours away a long time ago.

Haven't had to use one but a few times in the past, always with good luck as long as we do it once, then follow the next day and do it again. Keep the calf with the cow, and soon will be nursin that quarter too. Shortly after we turned her back into the lot from the chute, the calf was already suckin on that one. Seems like if you can get it down to size the calf will take care of keepin it sucked after that. Least thats the experience we've had so far. Keepin my fingers crossed tho lol

Yeah Fh, she's got tuffer cows and hungrier calves, so they keep the ol' cow sucked out, once the quarter is started. Maybe you need to get some "ear" in your herd?

This is what we call "Yucca" or "Soapweed"

They hurrrrrrt!

They aren't doing anything right now, they develop a "pod" which we've been told you can steam and put butter on, I think NOT!! YUK!!

Yeah I like that ole "ugly" cow. She raises a real nice calf ever year. Just surprised me it wasn't a black one this time. Muffin....Lil Lilly's show heifer that she kept last year out of her pen of 3 (start with 5) is out of that cow.

Had more rain this mornin.....so the muds still here .........woo hooooo!!!!! looked on a website for our average of rain fall for the year....we are 3 inches plus ahead.........for the year. Man this is sure nice.
