Had a 3 yo cow bag up last night so we put her in the barn. Nothing happened. This morning Hubby said it looked like she had some water bag coming out and left her in.
checked her at noon. Nothing.
checked again at 2pm. Nothing, but it just seemed off.
Put her in the head catch and took a feel. It felt wrong.

Called the vet out and he said she had a twisted uterus.
Went through the side with plans to untwist it and deliver the calf normally.
He grabbed the uterus and it split. Something else is going on.
He gets the feet out and together we pull the calf out. Nice little heifer. She was alive.

got the cow stitched up and in a clean pen. Got some colostrum thawing right now for the calf.
just hope the cow survives her breathing was off, but she is drinking.

The one I had didn't survive, but she started calving one evening when I had a dentist appointment at 10:00 Am the next morning in Rapid(2 hours away) I knew she was still at it when I fed, but getting my 2 rotten teeth pulled was more important. I took her to the vet when I got home.

Got 2 pints of colostrum in the calf.
Calf is looking perkier. Took another bag out of the freezer to thaw. Going to give her more around 1am. This is stuff I milked out of my Jersey.

Cows not looking good. :( She is just laying there.

Give your cow an IV of dextrose . I like through the milk vein best. What meds did your vet give her ?

You are really going to have to mother her, keep hauling nice leafy hay and water.
Right now you need to think of them as separates ,not a pair.

Once you get the baby fed with groceries and warm; I am sure she will perk up lots.

Wish I was there to help you out.

Sorry for your luck.
We've also had a twisted uterus this year.
Sometimes when the cow has been going a while, the uterus is very frail and will tear if you mess with it too much. I had to learn this the hard way!
I don't even untwist them when doing a c-section until the calf is out and the uterus is all stitched up. Then I untwist it and place it back in the cow. I have someone run their arm into the cow to make sure everything is alright.
I also have never been able to untwist the uterus without doing a c-section. Tricky business!
As long as your vet gave her good antibiotics, pain meds and stitched all the tears back up, I bet she'll pull through.

HD he gave her some dex and oxytosin. Along with some LA200. Put some boluses in the uterus.
Gave her some crested wheat grass, ground barley and filled her water tub again. I'm going to bust open that alfafa bale and give her some of that tomorrow.
She's not interested in the food yet.

He said that the uterus may have been twisted for a few days because he found the beginning signs of infection when he was finishing up. thinks maybe that is why the uterus tore so quickly when he touched it.

I hope she makes it too Jillaroo.

this is our second c-section this year.

She has eaten a couple handfuls of hay last night. Took a bit this morning.
No interest in the hay when I was down there. Didn't touch the alfafa i gave her.
Just lays there. Hubby got her up this morning. Had to use the hot shot.
She did pee.

Calf got 2 more pints of colostrum at 2am and then got 2 1/2 pints of fresh milk from the milk bucket at around noon.
Cow did show an interest in the calf last when it got up. no interest in the calf this morning.

Sorry to hear that ILH. Keep at it, she may come around. As long as she isn't in pain ,I would still give her a chance . Due you have anything stronger than pen, as i am not a fan of it for an internal infection. I would use Nuflor of Baytril . Still would give her an IV of dextrose with B12 in it. I know you are crazy busy with calving and this is the last thing you need ,been there and it really is a plate full.

Good luck .

Calving has slowed down a bit HD.

She got up this evening and the calf stood up too. Calf got latched on and nursed her down good. She did kick a couple of times, but was sniffing the calf and did lick it.
Started eating more hay too.
She didn't lay down right away either.
gave her more water. She is looking much better.

Got our fingers crossed. Going to watch her closely for the next couple of days.

She stood longer today. Ate some of the alfafa. Gave her some barley hay and she ate some of that too.
Cleaned up the ground barley from early this morning.
Has claimed the calf. We had sprinkled some O-NO-MO on the calf shortly after birth and it was completely gone from her this morning.
All of her water was gone so washed the tub and refilled it.

Will call the vet about some stronger antibiotics. She is looking better.

She is still eating just a little bit. when we put out the water she just licks it and will take 2 swallows.
hubby gave her some more antibiotics this morning.

I called the vet this evening because I am concerned she might be dehydrated. She is peeing though. Her poop is not hard though.

Gave the calf a 3/4 bottle of milk this evening. Boy was that calf hungry. Going to supplement the calf until the cow is much better.

We are at the turning point of either we win the battle and she lives or we lose and she dies.

Drank more tonight then she has in the last few days. Going to dig out the thermometer and get her tempature. Not too interested in the hay.
Laying there groaning a bit and kicking at her side a bit.
Had hit her with some more LA 200 about a day or so again.
hubby said he was going to hit her again tomorrow with Dura Pen.
I called the vet and asked for the strongest antibiotic we can get. Waiting to hear from him he is on a call.

Hubby's being an azz about me calling the vet.

Has anybody ever tryed the plank system.Had a vet that was from England years ago.
He would check to see which way the uterus was twisted.than put the cow down flat.
We than put a 2-6 board on cross ways right behind the ribs.put lots o weight on the plank usally someone sitting on each end.than roll the cow back against the twist.worked on the last 3 we had.
Sure hope you all can picture this.worked extra good when the wife.s aunt happened to vist.used her for weight.

Hit her with 60cc's of Dura Pen last night. She just laid there for the first 30cc's then got up.
Her ears were drooping last night at 2am and she was not too steady on her back legs. Not a happy looking cow.
Did drink more water.
Shortgrass I have some powder Probios thanks for reminding me, I'll mix that in her tub of water tonight.
Vet called this morning. Hubby mixed up a warm water flush with some LA200 and flushed her vaginally with that. said it rinsed alot of the infection back there out.

Her temp last night was 102.

calf drank a whole bottle of milk last night and a 3/4 bottle this morning. Cow is just not producing enough for the calf. With her being sick it is not good for the calf to be nursing her all the time.

My vet used the plank system about 3 years ago - - -dead calf ( 120 # ) but the cow survived

I had never heard of it before but it worked!
