Since most of you know that my son wrestles for Valentine Badgers... I want to take some time here to clear up some misunderstandings....

From Coach Allison:
I have remained quiet about this until I had all the facts. We did have a wrestler that was diagnosed with impetigo. The wrestler in question was treated with antibiotics and cleared to wrestle. We also had some other people who had been diagnosed with impetigo and treated with antibiotics, all of which cleared up the lesion. Antibiotics do not work against herpes gladiatorum because it is viral and not bacterial.

When the wrestler was examined at the clash the first thing that came out of the examiners mouth was "that is impetigo, has he been on antibiotics?" In which I responded yes, here is the proper paper work. He was then cleared to wrestle. They did not ask for it the second day. Maybe they remembered him.

The outbreak in MN has concerned us. We have been having skin checks everyday. Anything looking remotely suspicious has been sent to our physicians. We noticed some spots on the alleged culprit of the outbreak. These spots looked exactly like what he had prior to the clash. His dad took him to Kearney today to see a board certified dermatologist. This is the same guy hired to oversee skin checks at the NCAA wrestling tournament. He has cleared our kid to wrestle immediately, and said in no way does he have herpes gladiatorium, or anything contagious at all.

We here in Valentine have followed protocol in regards to all skin lesions. We have held kids out of meets for impetigo and ringworm in the past and will continue to do so if necessary. We wash our mats two to three times a day, with extra disinfectant as of late, and apply kin shield before every practice. I would in no way allow a wrestler to wrestle without medical clearance.

Now to the people in MN, I am outraged at the false accusations that have been made toward our program. I would like to point out that there has not been a single case of herpes gladiatorum in NE or in the SD teams we have wrestled. Our town and wrestling program has been plastered on headlines throughout the United States as being the culprit of the outbreak you have in MN. I was glad we were notified of the outbreak since we did wrestle some teams that had it, but to point the finger at us without any proof is unprofessional and unwarranted. MN wrestling has a history of herpes gladiatorum, as in 1999, 60 some wrestlers had to sit out the state meet due to skin conditions. It looks to me as we were fingered out to take the rap for issues in your state. I feel bad for the boys that have contracted this, but in no way were we responsible for the outbreak."

So once again the media got it all wrong....... We do NOThave any wrestler or wrestlers with herpes gladiatorum or are there in the state of Nebraska.... I want you all to know how hurt and angry we are to be accused of something we didn't do or have....
