Weather

sorry to hear theat FH... WE have been living with weather forcasts that are saying 80% chance of rain and than getting none. We finally got a 2 weeks of
0-20% chances and got a .8 inch shower, a 1.75 inch downpour and another .75 inches a few days later. All of sudden everything is green although if/when the heat returns it won't matter too much (Cool season grasses which dominate our pastures don't do to well with day time temps in the mid 90's and lows at 74 or so)... The corn farmers are happy which makes me a bit happier as it probably ensures a cheap source of back up feed this winter.

Hope you guys get some rain soon, it is so frustrating when you go extended periods of time with much less rain than you should be getting, add the blistering heat and it is down right infuriating.... I would say try not to worry to much about it but I really shouldn't give advice that I could never follow myself.

Well, there isn't anything that can be done about it, except put up with it.
One thing about it, the grass can't get any more 'cured' than it is now.

Sometimes I wonder what the difference is between 'cured grass' and
'dried up' grass. Except one sounds better...

Just gotta keep the cattle on as good of pasture as we can and of course, ALL THE WATER THEY CAN DRINK.

In N Ga we got rain yesterday...all last nite and so far most of today.

Looks like I'll be getting a FULL 3rd cutting of hay now!!!

Supposed to be around 100 here today and tomorrow....Had a terrible time sleeping last night just because of the dry heat, dust, and all that "cured" grass smell in the air- wasn't really any wind but it was really playing heck with my allergies...

I got some tanks cleaned out and checked out the pumps- stays like this with no rain and we may have to start pumping so they can get ALL THE WATER THEY CAN DRINK... I heard that some are already having to haul water...

3 weeks ago I was running my cows on a well cured parcel of Barley... the amount of water they needed a day was unreal. Moved them to a greener pasture and their water consumption dropped in half. I agree, gotta keep nice, fresh water infront of them at all times when they are eating this sun burned stuff out in the fields.. Of course, I am a big fan of a big old tank of water in front of them at all times. Between lactation and eating that dry stuff these cows needed a lot of water.

Sun cured... Was there something wrong with it before
You are right though, not much a difference but sun cured sure sounds more palatable than dried up husks of grass,

Hope you get some nice rain for a good fall green up FH.

We have been hauling water to a group of cows and they will drink from 20 gal. to 30 gal a day. These are not huge cows probably will weigh 1200 lbs with 250 lb calves on them. I would guess that bigger cows would take more. The weather really has an impact on how much water they need every day.

I sure hope everyone gets the rain they need and soon! We are into a stretch of hot days where it doesn't cool off much in the night, so it is more than enough to make me whine! There is rain forecast for the end of the week, but that will either recede as we get closer, or come in lump form after this heat wave.

It is around 105F here at 1:00pm. Its just a smoker out there today!!! We were out this morning fixing some fence and moving some cows/calf pairs to another paddock and holy man it was hot!!!!!!!! WE need a rain desperately as things are dying and the crop is getting shorter!! Talking some showers tonite but I will believe it when i see it. :(

Yeah, I am a firm believer if waiting to see to believe. Too many storms just missed us this summer to count on the weather forcasts. The onl time we got rain this year was when they said we weren't going to get any... We were a cool 85 or something today, when the son comes out it gets a bit warmer but we have had clouds for most of the day. Just got back in from mineraling the bulls and cows and checking water tanks.. Neighbor stopped by to sts and now it is almost time for a late lunch... Good day, hope those storms come your way MR.

sitting here at work and the sheriff's office just sent word over the scanner that we are in a "severe fire weather watch til 10 pm".....due to dry thundershowers...everyone from Great Falls to the Idaho line to on the lookout!! Called the hubby and gave him a heads up so he can be watching the fields....again!!

Around 100 here and it is so dry that if I had eaten a bowl of hot chili for lunch, I would be afraid to spit for fear of starting a prairie fire. :!:

I just saw a jackrabbit pass by carrying a canteen, and when he got to the hiway he jumped on a truck with a Canadian liscense plate.

Must be wetter up there.

It's been over a hundred for the last 3 or 4 days, don't know when it was under 90 last. Moved one bunch of cows yesterday so they can have some shade if they want it. Got them there by 9:30 and that wasn't any too early! Hay is drying nicely though  Thunder clouds are building...better go fill up the water tank on the fire rig. Hubby is picking up the last two loads of my grass hay. His oat/pea/barley hay is all cut, just waiting for the peas to dry.

we got 1 1/2 tenths yesterday and maybe that much again this evenin......it needs to just come on and have a rip roarin good ole fashioned thunder storm. I"m ready :D One of them that knocks the power out, and ya hafta eat blony sammichs by candle or Karosene lamp light.........sweatin goin to bed with no A/C..........come on....do it......LOL

Well that chance of rain came and went tonite. Hardly even clouded up. Temp was running around 105F and higher this afternoon. It is still 90F outside right now. Way too darn hot for this cowboy :cowboy: If i liked it this hot and dry I would move down beside Haymaker    Thank god for a/c in the bedroom, I think if I leave it this high there will be frost on the windows by morning

103 yesterday- never did cool down below 80 during the night- already 87 at 9AM on its way to 100 again....Waiting for the kid to show up with some parts- but might be too hot to work on by the time he gets here--old metal gets hot enough to fry eggs on...At 8AM I looked at a thermometer the sun was shining on and it was already 107

Same thing here MR- we had little storms roll all around us- but no moisture- just lightning...Haven't heard of any fires....

Just heard on the local tradio show- someone calling in desperately looking for any stock tanks they could buy, borrow, or rent.....This heat is starting to get old....

We got a little rain last week and it is turning green and making grass grow a little. Last Monday I got ¼ inch and that was the most I had had since early May. Then Saturday evening I got a good inch. That was more than we have had at one time since January. So total for the week I make it 1.25 inches and loving it. I put out some more fertilizer Friday just in time for the rain on Saturday so if we get a few more showers along and I get a cutting in late August I could still get a skimming in October. I just may make it through the winter after all but I won't have any hay to sell to help cover the cost of fertilizer.
4 X 5 rolls are selling for $60 right now. I would hate to have buy one this February. There won't be any so it will have to be trucked in and cost well over $100 each.
I hate to think it but I see a storm brewing in the gulf and it may take some storm type rain to keep us going.
