What are the odds?

New Years day I found an aborted baby calf. So much for a good start to 2015. Cows will start calving the end of Feb. This calf was a heifer and weighed about 15lbs. I brought the cow in to sell but she is still full on both sides. There was a small afterbirth, not the size usually seen at a full term delivery. What are the odds of it being a twin and her aborting but still carrying one? Am I crazy..most probably! Think I should check her before hauling her to town?

Won't cost anything 'cause I can do it myself. Just gotta convince myself I really want to check a cow when the thermometer says 0 or less! Mostly, I was wondering if aborting a twin but retaining the other was possible.

It has happened here a time or two. I would check her before she goes on the truck.

I have heard legends to that effect. I hope you check her so we'll all know for sure :D

Okay. -13 here this morning. Yeah, I know. That's warm for most of you :-)
Checked the cow and she's not carrying another calf. Just fat. and hungry.
Loaded her up to head to town and about 8 miles down I-70, my Stanadyne fuel treatment appeared to have the same qualities as my cow-not wanting to work for a living-so I turned around and got back home before I needed a tow truck. Unloaded the cow into the same pen she came out of. She's wondering about me. Next week will be warmer.

We have been using just regular #2 with howes in the tractor and skid steer. Haven't had a problem so far. Knock on wood. Been about 5 degrees colder than you all winter. I wander if some of your problems down there come from being a lot more humid in the summer and everyone neglecting moisture problem at the fuel stations? A lot of friends where my wife lives always have problems. The only time we have ever had a problem was when a fuel filter was about 500 hours past due for a change on the loader tractor.

put a big old X on her so JR don't buy her and haul her up her !! LOL

You sure made me laugh, Jigs. JR apparently cuts a wide swath. I don't know if he's in Salina on Monday or has one of his minions buying.

I am in JR's home town. first farm we bought was bought from him..... the guy is very genuine. we sell calves at Salina and I always tell him to bid up on them, they are the kids cattle.....

is Monday his Herington sale???

I don't know his schedule but I do like JR. Salina had a special calf sale today and he wasn't there. I watched on livecattle. His name was never called. He's in Salina on Thursday, Mankato on Friday. He owns part of the Mankato barn? Sylvan will have an occasional sale on Saturday and he'll be there. I've wondered how much money/cattle goes through his hands in a weeks time. Last fall he bought 30 pot loads in one sale out of Salina. He's bought a lot of calves for me and a lot from me. A top notch guy in my book. I love his Hawaiian flowerdy shirts-remembering that line from a Ray Stevens song. :)
