What happens to commodity beef sold by Tyson? Dick Bond recently announced that Tyson needs to get into more of a commodity mindset in the way they conduct their business because the majority of the beef they sell is still in the commodity category.
The majority of the balance of their beef is sold under the Tyson brand and perhaps other brands from time to time. I can see why Tyson would not be in favor of M-COOL for several reasons. One of these would be because they want to promote their Tyson brand. They don't want that to be complicated by other issues.
But the commodity beef is another subject. Food service, including schools, hospitals and other institutions, certainly would be included in the commodity beef purchasers list, but not always. I'm sure the Tyson people have been able to sell some "Tyson" beef to some food service customers.
Likewise, they probably sell a pretty good amount of commodity beef to smaller supermarket chains that still have butchers who "finish the job."
My question is, if 60% of the beef sold by Tyson is commodity beef, how is M-COOL going to affect the market and the customer base? Perhaps school food service programs can be forced to buy U.S. produced and processed beef. What else?
