Just got done reading Wild Cow Tales by Ben Green. Anyone who hasn't read it, should. I enjoyed it a lot.

I've read most of them. Ben was a natural story teller. Unlike a lot of "true" tales, I believe Ben was cowboy and trader enough to have done everything he wrote of.

I agree that his tales are true stories. Having cows that range in this part of world, I could relate to some of the tricks and techniques he used to gather the cows. I will have to read his other works. I had a good cowboy friend of mine let me read Wild Cow Tales. He told me I would enjoy it cause he knows I have had many similar experiences with ornery cattle. If his other books are as good, I look forward to them.

They are all good ones. You won't be disappointed!

I had one of the shocks of my life a couple of years ago. We were visiting about books with our neighbors and I mentioned Will James.
They both got a puzzled look on their face and said, "who's that?"

It was inconceivable to me that someone, let alone TWO people, especially in Montana, had never heard of Will James... :?

That's almost sinful. Will James was one of my all time heroes. It about broke my little grade school heart when I found out he had fabricated his "autobiography" entitled Lone Cowboy, that he wasn't raised by the old fur trapper Jean Beaupre, that he was actually born in Quebec, and that his real name wasn't Will James but Ernest Dufault. :( I even named my firstborn "Will" in his honor.

All of Ben Green's books are great reading. There are even some useful tricks of the trade that can be learned from them.

I think my mother had every Will James book he wrote... When my sister and I were little she would read from Will James books and show us the sketches instead of Mother Goose for our bedtime stories...
I think I've shed more tears over Smokey the Cowhorse than any other story!

Smokey the Cowhorse was kind of the wild west cowboy version of Black Beauty. Smokey hit much closer to home. :-)

Dad raised a colt out of his Blue Bell mare and a Sitting Bull stud that McConaugheys owned. The colt was called Smokey, and he turned into a tall handsome gentle grey gelding. I rode him frequently, but Smokey's younger sister, Nickolena, was my personal mount. One day Dad and I were trailing some yearling heifers to a distant pasture. The heifers circled around a pond instead of going straight up the trail. Dad rode Smokey through the pond to turn the heifers. Smokey stumbled and went down, and Dad spread-eagled out in the two feet of water. He came up soaking wet and seriously irate. Smokey had stumbled a few times too often that day anyway. The next opportunity that came along, Smokey was sold to a horse trader. A week or two later, the horse trader was killed in a truck wreck north of Gordon. Most of the horses that were on the truck survived, but I never did hear what became of ol' Smokey.

Sorry folks but I gotta call baloney!!!!

I have never heard of anyone from Wayne county Utah that could read!

Ben Green has some good books. I sure have enjoyed having Mrs. H' read them to me! :D

The principal of our school gave us their copy of Smokey cause we were the only family to check the book out in years. Tiffany had asked the librarian about the book and she didn't even realize they had it until I spied it one night at a school board meeting and pulled it out on the shelf a little bit and told Tiffany where it was. :D

Bought Cowboys north and south and Drifting cowboy at a Old Book store last summer in Moose Jaw. Not sure but they just had a big fire in MJ and I think it was the building right beside the book store. :?

That's a good one H! I'm still laughing! The only books I read all year is when I'm staying at the calving barn. It's a good time to practice sounding out the words.
