Wildlife official owns up to accidental shooting of female pheasant, pays fine
By staff reports
PUBLISHED: December 6, 2006
The director of the South Dakota Wildlife Foundation has been cited for possession of unlawfully taken game.
Chris Hesla said he was hunting in Tripp County in October and accidentally shot a female pheasant. He paid $94 in fines and court costs.
"I just shot a hen pheasant and I fessed up to it, and I think I did the correct thing," he said.
Emmett Keyser of the state Game, Fish and Parks Department said perhaps 25 to 30 citations are issued each year for shooting a hen.
"People make mistakes and errors in judgement," Keyser said. "It's not all that uncommon, but it's not real common for people to actually turn themselves in, and we want to commend people that do that."
