Winchester 30-30

Sure looks like a heavy-bodied hog. The muley I took last year was the biggest bodied deer I've ever seen. 'Course he stunk so darn bad the only thing we kept were the back-straps and enough meat to do some jerky. Me and a buddy just about blew an o-ring or two trying to get him in the truck. :lol:
 
The culvert thing was my idea of a joke which, in hindsight, didn't work. So I'd like to apologize to Mrs Greg and Pure and and other Battle River folk if you took it the wrong way.

I harvested the brute off the Blackfoot grazing reserve under conditions that old Bill Matheson (god rest his soul) on TV used to describe as the "arctic vortex". Bill, for those who didn't hear, passed away last week down in Lethbridge.
Sad to say that last year's buck was a little more modest. But I know what I'll be doing come Nov. 1.
 
Wasn't at all offended Niel,just didn't quite get it. Because of the river hills?We have some really nice bucks down along the Battle,some are pretty smart and stay on Power Plant land thats posted for hunting season

Pure,our meat market in Forestburg does wild meat up really good,trims all the fat away,grinds up the burger and we make the sausage after.
 
Neil - I just heard the other day that Bill had died, from Dr. Hank Janzen. Too bad.

Mrs. Greg - We've been taking critters to those folks in Forestburg for 3 years now. THey do great work, and they're great people. They did our first grass-finished beeves for us this summer, and it was awesome! That reminds me, I was going to post that on Ranch Talk.

Haymaker - My perfect deer rifle, since we have alot of bush and BIG hill country, is my Remington 710 in 30-06 Springfield. Grey composite stock and Bushnell Elite 3X9 scope. Not the highest quality optics, but it works until I can afford something better. Love the 30-06 though. Hits hard and fast and flat.
 
PureCountry,that dont sound like a bad set up to me,If I could only own one gun,it would darn sure be a 3006,and there aint anything wrong with Bushnell scopes that I know of,I got leuopold because I did some trading,and got a good deal on a couple of them............good luck

On a lever ,I really cant say,the one I have was bought in "52",bolt actions are easy because of the extractor,the pre 64's have a claw,altho some of the new ones do now also,find the serial # and do a lil research,I would bet it is a pre 64 tho,just on account of the calibre,maybe Mike will see this and tell you what to look for................good luck

Thanks Mike, I checked it out and it is a 1949 model. It is a little different since it is in the 32 Winchester special calibre.

My brother called them Indamoes,yeh same thing yur talkin I suppose they debone on spot and carry out in backpack.Why carry out extra weight

Found a mule doe yesterday right near the gate we pushed 300 cows thru. Someone had taken the back straps the hanches and left the rest. No tag in the ear either. We had a retired CO riding with us. two years ago that would have really set him off.
 
It came in pretty handy last year I shot a buck across a creek in the thick willows-you could get across on the ice if you were quick but no way you could drag a deer across it. So I quartered him up-peeled the backstraps and threw them across lol. I think the eskimoes do it that way because when it's really cold the hide freezes on by the time you are done gutting. You should of seen the locker plant guys eyes one time when I pulled up with 36 mule deer quarters in the truck lol.
 
The easiest way to tell if its a pre 64 is if the pin that holds the bottom plate of the reciever has a screw to hold it in place. Post 64s top ejects dont have this.
About the original questions about new bullets for the 30/30.
I cant see it being worthwhile trying because regular Winchester Silvertips work great in the 30/30 for the accurate range of the rifle.
One thing you have to check out on those old 94s are the headspace. If you cant check this get a gun smith to do it. Those old 94s can be tightened up by bending the bottom plate of the reciever. This jams the locking bolt up higher which tightens your headspace.
