does anybody know where i can get some kind of POWER winder for 14 to 17 gauge electric fence wire. would like to be able to put it on to reusable spools in order to use it again. thank-you all

We built one that uses romex spools and man power crank hooks up to the reciever hitch on you four wheeler. One spool will hold about a mile of wire. Works pretty slick we can pull about a half mile at a time from one location. My cousin tried to build an electric one that would run off a drill but he kept burning up the drills didn't work that good any way. If it wasn't buried it so much snow I would take a picture and post on here but I am to lazy to did it out I will if you want draw a diagram of it and post it. Good luck

I made one out of a piece of all-thread, a few nuts, washer, and 3/4 x 4in pipe nipple. (nipple is slipped over the all-thread and loosly doublnutted to use as a handle to hold on to while rolling the wire). Powered by an 18v cordless drill. A little clumsey to use (need one more hand to control wire)a design change would help but it works for what I need.

thank-you for the reply's they all look interesting. cure, if at some point you can get some picture's it would be greatly appreciated, a diagram would be good to start. thank-you all again.

One of the neighbors uses a couple of old Allis Chalmers round balers. He drives along rolling up the wire, like wise to pay it back out. He has some dividers to roll multiple strands at a time. Seems to work for him. Gives new life to some of the older technology.

Hayguy, this one is made in Sask. I can't remember the name of it but it works pretty well. I have unrolled and rolled barbwire with it. It need more taper to get the spools off easier. I have seen that E Z roller from Texas work. It is definitely a Cadillac for sure.

I don't think we live more that an hour apart if you would like to come and look at it PM me.

We made a 3 pt. hitch wire roller very similar to the one that Per has; just kept digging stuff out of the junk pile till we had enough to build. Used a variable speed hydraulic control ....works slick. We use two 20 inch disc blades with a short piece of pipe between to roll barb wire.....quite easy to take off (unless you roll a 1/2 mile of wire at once..... too heavy!). Once you get on to running it you can roll almost as nice as factory.
For high tensile wire we just re-use the wooden reels that new wire comes with; can roll a mile of smooth wire in minutes and make a decent job of it. Our wooden reels are getting pretty beat up so will be having the local welder make us some steel reels.
We use quite a bit of portable fence on stubble, swath grazing etc. & the hydraulic roller is one heck of an improvement over the hand crank wire jenny we started with! :-)

here is my diagram of our winder I hope you can follow it art is not one of my finer talents :D . But what we did is we went and got some wire spools and made it to fit the biggest one. That is why the hand crank has the holes drilled in it to fit the smaller ones. As for the size of pipe we just used some scrap that was laying around. If you have anymore questions or something else just pm me.

Here is an electric fence wire winder which is powered by a 12-volt battery such as a pickup truck battery or a battery placed on an ATV or trailer.

look's like a pretty good winder, i like that it,s designed for the 17-14gauge wire and not trying to make something else work for the lighter wire. do you know if the spools fit any kind of hand reel? do you know if there are any canadian dealers/distributers? kinda pricey though.

this company now makes a wire winder powered by a gas motor. there hydralic ones work great.

Pretty slick rig there, and welcome to the site.

agree that it's a slick looking rig but he joined a year and a half ago,put up one post and haven't seen anything from him since, kinda like the honda powered pounder guy's.....

I'll get some pictures, because I'm using the best winder for 14 guage electric fence wire I've ever seen. Not cheap, you'll need a bale-bed, or other hydraulic scource, but as handy as I have ever used. (Yeah, I built part of it..) Handles wire on factory spools, which the scooter will conveniently unroll, while carrying the posts to set it up.
