MCGURL,
Glad you are having fun.....
Two things can happen when a horse is bucking towards a gate or fence. You were prepared for the one that happens least often....Now you will be better prepared next time. And runaways are the worst....
As far as withers, not only is NR right on the single pad, if this horse gets rode down a little, you'll see more.....
Third thing I picked up is what FH said on backing....On a started horse, one or two steps back is plenty. It is pretty awkward for them, so they need a very immediate reward for what they have done. If you ask them to back with no relief, they can take it as, 'I thot this was the right answer, but there is no relief from the pressure, so I don't know what to do." That will make them Bracey......I know this as when I first started some young ones, I rode the reverse right out of one. She was probably the one that picked it up easier than any other I had been around. It was too fun, so I kept after it until she quit me.......
Also, I let them move around a lot with a saddle on but me on the ground. They can kick, buck and everything else and learn it won't hurt them with me already on the ground. If they learn planting you brings relief....Well, that is not a good lesson, LOL...
Keep having fun, keep watching for how they react and interpret what it is you are asking for......Pretty amazing when a 1,000 pound animal decides life is best just doing what you ask...Hmmm...if only my 124 pound wife thot the same, LOL,
And again, I like the gates in the background
