Anyone have an idea what yearling steers will be going for in a few months? We are considering purchasing some to run for the summer---always been a cow/calf operation but might be picking up some extra summer pasture nearby. Thanks in advance!

My guess is they'll be higher than a kite. Supplies will be short I would think. By the way I'll have a load for sale in March. 8)

When we bought yearlings for grass we tried to get them bought early. The closer to grass time the high they went.
This year they haven't even had that new year slump. The market has stayed hot and gaining from last fall. As Soapweed said he sold his steers to early as they have gotten higher since.

i sold some steers weighing 560 yesterday, only problem was i didn't have a whole lot more of them to sell…market was on fire, especially for the grass type cattle.

Looks to me like buying steers, or even heifers, for grass and then selling in the fall is a really good way to lose your shirt. I just sold some 650# steers for over $1,200 each and I'm glad I was selling.

I would love to buy a couple dozen critters to throw in the fat pen. I have talked to about every barn owner in the country, and they all laugh at what I am willing to pay. I don't need nice blacks or reds. They can even have broken legs. Still can't get anything bought.

We saw cattle pot after cattle pot going down Hwy 34. Didn't know if they were bringing cattle in or hauling them out, but there was a whole bunch of them going towards St. Onge. Glad you got to sell some on a barn burner. Congrats!!

thank you. i think it was the first barn burner i have ever been involved in, it was fun  i just wish i would've had those steers i sold in november in town yesterday.

Thanks for your input...pretty well what I was thinking I'd hear :-) I wonder with the terrible drought in CA if folks there will flood the market selling off their herds? Talked to a few people there that say its as bad as its ever been back there :-(

Our CPIP (Cattle Price Insurance) was letting you lock in 850# calves for September 1st at $1.66. The premium as $2.52/cwt.

That is in CDN $ and would make an 850# steer worth $1390 after you paid the premium ($1278 USD)
