I helped a neighbor guy move cows home yesterday. Had Flyin S with his 2 dogs, riding a GREEN horse, a 60ish year old lady, riding a young horse, and her pup. Me, riding my newest acquisition, with Squeek. We started out with 742 cows, and had to sort 2 gimpy ones off. Shouldn't have been too bad of a deal, but with all the trees, wind, and ice, it made things interesting. About an hour later, we got 740 of them pointed into the wind. I'm not sure how it was for the rest of the world, but in our little corner of it, the wind was blowing 30mph, and the temp was hovering right around the 10 degree Fahrenheit mark, with the cows pointed straight into it.
Other then Flyin S pulling the stem out of the trailer, and having to dodge all the "roads" because they were drifted shut, things went great. We covered close to 15 miles in about 7 hours, sorted off 15 head of cows that had either slunk their calves, had sore feet, or just needed a bit less stress, then dealing with the 670 plus head at the feed pile.
All in all a pretty good day for the younger horses. Darn good day for someone that hasn't hardly been on a horse all winter. Only couple bad sides of it were, I still can't feel my little toe, and Squeek had to have a couple baby aspirin, and had to sleep in the house. He was stove up worse them me, last night.
