Hi, my daughter is 4 years old and just starting to ride. She's pretty small (25 lbs) and we have quarter horses (wide backs). Does anyone have any recommendations on what type of saddle to buy? I looked at a 12" Corriente today and it looks pretty nice. I like the rough out seat and high cantle. But don't know much about this brand or other brands for kids. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks very much. Lazy K in Arizona

First of all don't but anything that is cheap. Just because it's a kid's saddle doesn't mean you shouldn't spend some cash on it. Buy a good one, you will never regret it and if kept in good shape won't lose much value. Make sure that the tree is sound and that the leather is well oiled. Cracks in the leather mean that the saddle hasn't been well cared for, and the leather is rotten. We have some Circle Y's they are nice for the money and they hold up. We also run 'taps' on our kids' stirrups so that they can't stick a foot thru.

corriente saddles i've been around have never fit the horse right. sitting in one was like sitting on a bed of nails!!!

Thanks for your replies. I appreciate your candid answers. Anyone know where a good place to buy a new youth saddle would be?

Kings Saddlery have always been excellent for us to work with.
They have a lot of patience, it seems. But we have been customers
for over 40 years, so maybe we've earned it!!

Try this guy, Rafter W Saddlery in Rigby, Idaho.
The Oakie just sent for a saddle from him and we did too.
He seems like he is very knowledgeable and a real straight shooter.
If he doesn't have one, he might know where to send you.

Good Luck!!! (And let us know what you wind up getting, if you don't mind.)
