Well I'm batching it this week as my bunch is Indianapolis bound for the national FFA convention. Littlest H was part of the Utah state winning forestry team and was high individual as well. They are headed to Louisville today to spend some time touring around places like Church Hill Downs and the Louisville Slugger facility. Then headed to Indianapolis for the convention. My wife and daughter went with them. I'm here to be unskilled labor as usual.

Kids in their new jackets in Tintic high colors. Their FFA advisor is on the right. Jody will know her. That's Tracy Warnick (married name) from Star Valley Wyoming

Kids have never been in a plane. So this is a huge adventure for them. Angie sent me a picture of them all settled in and getting ready to head for Chicago. Nervous and excited faces.

I went to the national FFA convention in 1967. It was an experience. Back then we didn't get to fly. We took the train from Washington to KC. That was an experience in itself. But along the way we stopped and toured the Wyoming Hereford ranch, the Denver Mint, the Air Force Academy, and Abilene Kansas.

Not Crook, Traci Walton. Graduated in 1998. Was a state FFA officer.

Well the kids did awesome. Received bronze and sliver as individuals and bronze as a team. Couldn't be prouder of some kids from one of the smallest high schools in the state of Utah. They are having a once in a lifetime experience.

You are proud and you should be. They should be proud of their accomplishment. But I do have a question for you. How the heck does a group of kids from the desert place so high in the forestry contest? A life time exposed to tall sagebrush? Maybe a towering juniper? They practice measuring tree height using telephone poles?

It's a fair question 😁
We are sure proud of them. They spent a lot of time studying. They made trips to the wasatch mountains and practiced measuring trees. It just goes to show hard work can take ya a long way. None of these kids have any back ground in forestry. But they are tenacious little buggers. If they would of had some sage brush to measure today they would of won the whole thing.

There is a natural resource contest for high school kids sponsored by conservation districts all over the country. The kids progress through a local contest to state and on to nationals. I was the state chairman in Washington for 4 or 5 years in the late 90's early 2000's. We had one teacher who had very competitive teams for a number of years. He was from the Columbia Basin area (no trees). He taught his kids to determine tree heights using light poles.
