I'm no Veterinarian but they take blood from cows under the tail;
Horses from the neck. Cows are usually restrained in a squeeze chute but horses can react and sometimes violently. Those front feet can strike out very quickly
Could have been something as simple as a light switch not flipped off all the way and they short out and heat up. Dust and cobwebs everywhere, maybe rodents chewed wires.

We seemed to to dragging in the heifer pens.150 in 30 days so should have been averaging 5 a day. it was quiet for a few days but burst open with 11 last night. Only a little confusion in the pen this morning
