    Bottle Calves

A similar story: several years ago, the sheriff came to a cattle producer's house in the night and said, 'Edgar, somebody's cut the fence into your cattle pasture and backed a semi in there.' The old guy said, 'How many did they take?' The sheriff said, 'It's worse than that, they dumped out a...

    Hooker county triplets

My daddy was a dairy farmer (try not to hold it against me! At least I saw the light and changed congregations) and one of those little jersey cows of his had quints!!! But they were all DOA, delivered naturally. Did the Hooker county cow have a section?

    Poor Start

I think there were 12 sets here and we are nearly done calving. All that were born alive lived, most cows took both calves, a few were grafted off if there was a good cow who had lost her baby through no fault of her own. This was on about 900 head.

Why do ranch hands move so often?

The only things a cowboy has are feedom and pride. And boxes, lots and lots of boxes!!

Why do ranch hands move so often?

Jinglebob wroteMaybe the answer to the question, why do ranchhands move so much, is because they can! I think that has a lot to do with it! And comparing them with other professions, we have moved three times for my job. The only things a cowboy has are freedom and pride ...

Why do ranch hands move so often?

Well Ranchwife, then Cowboyup is one of the good honest ones, and in reality, I am on YOUR side. If someone is a farmer, you wouldn't ask him to cowboy, would you? But very few will hesitate even a second to ask someone hired as a cowboy to farm. Been there, done that. I am not the cowboy, I am...

Why do ranch hands move so often?

That is all well and good, Cowboyup, IF you let someone know at hiring that there is considerable tractor work and other work to be done, and that you aren't looking for a cowboy. But I doubt you would hire a cowboy and expect him to tractor. There are a pile of people that will hire (or try to...

Why do ranch hands move so often?

It is my belief that a lot of the problems with cowboys could be avoided if no lies were told. How would it be if a cowboy said 'yes, I can calve out your cows' and couldn't? He'd be sent down the road pretty fast. But when a boss or owner tells someone during an interview, 'we'll fix this or...

Why do ranch hands move so often?

I honestly can say I don't believe (with that one exception) any of our moves were about money. Once OH even asked upfront why a guy was willing to pay so much more than other nearby outfits. That should have been a red flag. There are an awful lot of places that don't get the school bus, too...

Why do ranch hands move so often?

Let's see, what would the questions for an employer be? A few suggestions ... Why did your last help leave? List the names and addresses of three former employees. Do you have children? Have they worked for you in the past? Why are they not working for you now? Would you live in the...

Not a good thing to wake up to.

I've smelled the smoke and headed for the house on the run myself. Hope all remains well with you and yours, will be thinking and praying for you.

Why do ranch hands move so often?

Whoa, HMW, you are reading my mind, or what?? Mostly, we seem to have found all the real jerks in this biz, and they all had one thing in common -- they would tell any lie they had to so we would come to work for them, then figure that we were trapped with no money to go elsewhere, so they could...

How many horses should one use for checking cattle daily.

Not what I thought it meant, but very true for most people. I find it very hard to lope a circle because I want to lean into the well. Makes it hard for the horse, I try to 'watch' myself so's not to do it. When I was starting colts (out of the broodmare biz for the time being) it was always a...

    How is it?

How is it that just about any moderately intelligent, educated adult can be reduced by a dog, puppy, cute kitten or baby human into a blithering idiot who can only speak baby talk? Count me as guilty as charged :!:

How many horses should one use for checking cattle daily.

Explain that 'ride both sides' a little more, Faster Horses. I think I get the idea, but am not familiar with your terms. What I don't understand is the guys who have a wad of horses, none of them are broke (bronc out at any given moment) and none of them are in condition because they are only...

    How to avoid getting stiffed?

If they are pairs, or the buyer has a bank, or you have a bank, you may be able to call in a livestock repo man. There was an article in High plains journal last year, I think. These guys usually have bark on them and are often able to locate those 'strays.'

How many horses should one use for checking cattle daily.

Well, Faster horses, I agree there is no reason to be stupid about things. What p's me off is the guy (or girl) that pulls a horse out of the pasture when it hasn't worked in forever and then works the stuffing out of it. That's the horse that will get worn out easily. A lot of places -- or...

How much feed per day for a working cow horse?

Funny how things are different in different places. My stepdad always fed his horses straight corn that he had cracked. He lives in the deep South and that was what he could get for a little of nothing. And all his horses also lived to ripe old ages. But no one ever fed alfalfa, it was a scary...

    Hancock Horses question

The other half's favorite mount is a grade blue roan mare that we (and everyone that has ever seen her) is sure is hancock. All those descriptions fit her, tough, good legs, good feet, thick, hard headed. Everything except uglyheaded, because it is nice. Point of fact, her name is Beauty because...
