If I had to pull a calf out of a mature cow I would get rid of the cow and the bull if I knew which one was the sire. I don't mind helping 5% or less of my heifers but helping cows is a no no in my book. The best tool I own in the calving barn is a rusty calf puller. :wink:

If you can crossbreed and manage it correctly you are probably ahead of us straight breeders. I quit crossbreeding 20 years ago but am considering it again. Anything to improve fertility and longevity that's free is worth considering. We used to use a little Simmental back when they were red...

What breed or breeds do you use in you operation?

By the way I'm not trying to argue with you, my opens all averaged over 1400 pounds this winter. They were in good flesh 5.5 to 6 frame I would guess. Plenty big in my mind.

We're about 150 miles southeast of the Black Hills. We have a prairie elk season here. They really enjoy eating irrigated corn, you've never seen more well marbled elk meat. Hell if they were black they might qualify for CAB too. :lol:

He's only 3 miles away, I can go visit him whenever I want to, the elk that is.
