I don't know if it's true or not, but i've heard some people use Iron Wood and Cottonwood on Equipment trailers. It's supposed to hold up under those cat tracks.

I don't know if it's necessary to use 2x12s..that's your call. I was in the lumber business for a long time and if you can use 2x6s they will cost you a lot less per board foot. (for what it's worth)
