    Bovine biography

Exactly what Faster said, those cows are slick and the calves are growing. Kinda like ruminants were designed to do...

    Eat More Beef

I think we know the answer, it's just been too many years since Grandma's house was in the country.

    Branding 2018

I appreciate the suggestions, and they will be researched in our case. This is the first year we've gotten bit this way. Every year is a new challenge. The spring ranch needs to have some water and fencing improvement and we can trim this issue by 75 percent. Those 3 big calves just...

    Shearing

The Basques are tough, especially the ones from down under. When do you start lambing Jody?

    Branding 2018

Not very glamorous but the big bunch is done. Four of us got them across the cradle before dark. All but two hours acted rainy, but it never got wet where we were. Calves sure get big in 7 weeks. Nice to see winters effort amount to something. I'm not talking percentage anymore...

    Spearhead branding April 23, 2018

I know Corey was old school, so am I. I joined the JQHA in the mid 90s. I think I'm about even between handling cows the same every time, and the times the horse knew more than me. Ain't always right, but we muddle thru. I wish I had time to do it with horses and dogs. It goes a little faster..

    The Cow

They are a great source of entertainment, and gainful employment. Plus they come with an exercise program at calving.

Milk Cows…Nuff Said, by Dave Burgess, April 15, 2018

We poured ours through a strainer, and skimmed cream 12 hrs later. Made a lot of butter. I had 3 step in the bucket in my milking career. Best milk cows I've been around raised 3 or 4 calves per. Two turns every spring. Took some grain, but you could snitch a gallon when needed.

    Twins

Tomorrow will see the end of the bottle chores. Down to 100.8 percent, not cause of any loss, just more calves. Heifers and the north bunch using my surplus. Could have a lot worse problems. All the bad storms haven't done much here, although today started icy. Melting by sundown and warmer...

    Twins

We have our usual 4 sets out of 200 ish, so far. A couple are draft babies, a couple on the bottle for now. If I could swap the drafting for every cow having a live single... Silver, I hope you don't average down the next couple years, or you will miss the extras. My pet group is calving...

    Calving stories

This isn't a calving story, but a Saler story. I once had a "lonely" Saler bull come out of the trees and follow me horseback 3/4 of a mile into a set of shipping corrals. I was sure glad the gate chain and post between us held when he hit it. He went down hard enough I got around and chained...

Curt Pate, Whitt Hibberd, Bud Williams, Low Stress

I can't comment on low stress people handling, but as to processing cattle, we had to change how we refer to the task. It's not even close to work any more. I hadn't thought of applying the methods to me and mine. A valid point.

    sheep sale

I've never been on the premises, but I have hauled several loads by. Very vintage facility, but I hear they have a good sheep sale. A wool buyer close also I've heard.

    Heifer development

Kinda what Silver said. It's been a few years, but after I figured they were weaned the replacements went on stalks with the cows. Fed alfalfa for protein and scrounge. Come calving, they got their own patch and a little extra.

    How'd calving go?

We have heard some neighbors have had sick calves, and still do. Our weather left us alone, except for wind. Didn't bother. RSL, I have fought that battle, and I feel for you. It's a lot easier to barn and splint a calf, than not have enough barn, or labor. We'll get bit hard some year...

    How'd calving go?

I should mention that two of my pet 5 yr olds will be leaving. The one calved at an awkward time and got it killed this year. First time she hasn't been thru the barn... The other must have got mastitis chasing the decoy 4-wheeler when we tagged her calf. We were busy enough we about...

    How'd calving go?

I know every year is different for nearly every outfit. We got by real easy this year except for crooked front legs in one bunch and malpresentations. Calf losses were minimal until half done and that coincided with our twins. Backwards zapped us. A couple things I haven't seen before...

    Bale Grazing

Joe, we have 4 of 20 some built that are 7.5 high by 24 long. 2 3/8ths oil pipe frame with 24 gauge, I think, sheeting horizontal. 18 inches underneath gap, then a split between 2 36 inch sheets. 5 ft legs at 90, but made to swivel for transport. We had 2 fold from 45 to flat in a breeze...

    Bulls....

Then they start hiding in the trees. We could keep them up for a cycle, and might some year. In a former position, I helped AI 500 ish to a sync protocol. They checked the heifers on round 2. Nice calves, but we have hay to plant on this outfit. I'm pretty sure the collection station cusses...

    Bulls....

Yes, sir; I understand your very efficient AI program, but would you care to get that catch on 500 and change running on well over 5000 acres? We go to big grass next week, as do the bulls.
