    Different Portable Cattle Facilities

I’ve had a Linn post and steel corral for a few years. It’s been the best piece of equipment I’ve ever purchased.

    Heritability of phenotype.

Larry, in my opinion was one of the best, if not the best cattle breeder. I consider myself blessed to have known him and to have a lot of Shoshone genetics in my cows. Either from bulls of Larrys or from a few other great breeders that have carried on Shoshone genetics and Larry’s philosophies...

    Thoughts on replacement heifers

Another good reason for retaining ones own heifers is they are acclimated to the envoirment they are raised in. Out here it's a big deal. Born out on the winter range these young calves learn what to eat by watching their moms. Learn water holes. Learn to trail to and from summer ranges. I...

    Calving barn floor

Mine has a concrete floor. I just put straw down and haven't had a problem with cattle slipping. It's easy to clean. I use a pitchfork when the neighbors bobcat isn't available. Another reason I like the concrete floor is after getting the straw cleaned out, I like to use a disinfectant and...

    Calves

Do you still use any Shoshone Viking? Do you find the Chisum calves have a little to much leather. I was thinking about putting some Chisum on my Shoshone bred heifers. Your calves look good.

Calf problem. Anybody seen this before?

I've got a calf that I sent to the mountain that looks just like your calf in your pictures. I've seen this a time or two before. I'm no vet and not sure what causes this, but I believe it's something the cow eats later in her pregnancy. Every time I've seen this the cow has been eating loco...

    12,000 ft

We have tried about everything to avoid larkspur death lose. We need a herd of sheep to graze it before the cattle. But the forest service got rid of the sheep men. We use to not have as much trouble with larkspur until we were held down lower on the mountain, then we move up just as larkspur...

    12,000 ft

It is very tough to gather. Good dogs come in handy. Cattle are in good shape. It rained and hailed all day today. Lightning really got to popping. Found a few that got in the larkspur. Brought the doggies home. It's a tough place to run cows. But I love the country.

    Legendary Cattle Breeder Dies

I enjoy life. Larry Leonhardt ment a lot to me. I just think if a guy is going to post of Larry's passing he ought to at least know his name. Sorry if that's lame.

    Legendary Cattle Breeder Dies

His name is Larry Leonhardt. Not Leonard. Get it right or don't post.

    Branding Etiquette

Always good to learn how others do things. We use Nord forks and only bring them with both heals caught. The hand running the fork has got to know how to use it correctly. I, like some of you bite my tongue a lot of times. I don't mind kids roping, but I was brought up that you earn your way to...

    Branding Etiquette

Thanks for the responses. I like to rope and I like to work the ground. I usually am asked to cut or brand and I enjoy it. What I don't like is when guys come to brandings and refuse to work the ground. And when kids are brought, they are not made to work on the ground. I know it's good for kids...
